Raytracing makes 3D images by simulating light hitting surfaces 8) It's very slow. If you've ever seen incredibly realistic computer art of chess pieces or such, it was probably raytracing :P Ryzom and basically all games out now have to use polygons with textures, which doesn't look near as good, but can be done at a nice framerate. The raytracing thing was a joke :P

I did dabble a bit in Bryce, world builder and a few other similar 3D programs I do know what raytracing is but it's usually done on objects not on sunbeams...

Oh and most games use lightmaps for their dynamic lighting effects which is an additional layer covering the textures sometimes combined with bumpmaps and reflection maps...
