Seems a bit small minded to me.

These messages are useful to inform people events and so on are happening.

To be honest, I think it depends on the content of the message. I don't mind what they contain in general, but something like "Caley Roxors" is hardly complimentary. It has to do with context really - in a forum discussion where people are being humorous, sarcastic leet speak fits in, and people can see why it's being used.

In a game which appears to have a mature community, a new player seeing a message containing 'roxor' being broadcast to everyone could well be put off. Yes, it has a " :P " at the end - again, taken out of context the player could think the admins are a bunch of drooling fools with their tongues hanging out. Leet speak is horrible (just like using cuz, woz, sez and the rest), and defines a generation of internet-using idiots who would annoy the hell out of you if you met them. Use it out of context, and you're placed into that group of people by many, many internet users. It's the same as walking into a room full of people who don't approve of swearing, and reciting a scene from Pulp Fiction - you will not be liked.

Yes, a bit extreme complaining about something like this - but yes, I see exactly where the original poster is coming from :)

I still think it's petty and nasty.

We're fortunate to have guides and GMs with close, friendly links to the players and server populations. The community as a whole is a major selling point to this game and that would include the guides in their helpfulness, friendliness and openness.

Does this really matter? Is it worth a thread and nastiness? I think the potential damage to the community by changing that friendly attitude or taking away the messages is far more damaging than any mild irritation from event spamming.

I don't see how it's a big deal. Anyone who's worked in customer service or tech support would know why companies have to have canned responses such as "the MOTD can only be used for..." It's cause of the very occasional customer who'll badly twist things and make the situation hellish for a big company that has to appear fair to all its customers, or situations where they'd have to set a precedent which would cost them a lot of business, etc. It doesn't have anything to do with someone in support doing something in a light and friendly fashion for a change.

But this thread/reaction may prompt GMs to act even more impersonal, for the EXACT reason I explained in my above paragraph... :)
