If you're going to have alternate headgear why not have them by race and armour weight. Circlets for Light Armour, hats for Medium and Helmets for Heavy. Then you could customise by race, Matis have laurels for Light and something stupid for Medium (to fit with the rest of the armour. Come on, it looks like tights, and not flattering ones at that.). Tryker could have white headbands with a red circle like kamikaze pilots, Fyros could have black Rambo style ones and Zoria could tie golden threads and medals from their horns.
