Here's a quickie image I drew sometime back attempting to demonstrate how the deposit tracking works :0)

http://ryzom.vx3lan.com/ryzom/images/de ... acking.jpg

You are tracking the deposit that holds the source, not the source itself. So the closest edge of that deposit is what the tracking leads you to.

So if you end up running PAST the closest edge of the deposit and turn around...you just need to remember which direction you were traveling because the deposit is in that direction from the "closest edge" you originally tracked from.

As a few people have mentioned, it does not seem to be a precise location that you get lead to, but just the ball park. When I have difficulties i will often walk away from the deposit area in a random direction, activate tracking and come back, from a different direction. So if the first time I came up to it from the south, i would try walking 50 meters east and coming from there etc.

This will also give you an idea of how big a "ball park" the particular mat you are looking for is hidden in.

Also I have tracked excellent mats to a location, then tried to track them again and been told they were not there (trying to track them a second time, not prospect). This has normally been a daytime/nighttime, rain/snow/fine issue as i started teh track while it was raining, but it stopped raining before i got to the location.

like the pic shows, "source" is some 100x100m (little bigger or little smaller) area where deposit tracking (usually :-) takes you.
choice mats may be in left side and fine mats may be in right side, so they not equally placed.

so if you get message that "source closer than 1m" then just spam max range/angle/mat spec prospect until you out of focus. then move some and spam again ;-)

tip: before spamming, hit "no mat spec/up to supreme" prospect to get at least one source to pop, then dig at least one mat.. hehe, figure out why that's needed yourself ;-)

lets hope that devs will not try to "fix" it, it's working as intended :-)

I think tracking is working. Like I said, I've only had the one time when I just couldn't prospect a node of what I tracked to. We scoured a huge area in Fount and there just wasn't anything above basic seed/amber in the vicinity even though the tracking led us there. There were 2 of us and a GM there for quite a while and we just couldn't find it. We even harvested the basic thinking that maybe it'd run out and some choice would turn up.

I don't think it's a problem with tracking. I think in my situation it was a problem with the node layout in that area. There may be choice nodes there but perhaps they're obscured by overlapping basic nodes and are, therefore, inaccessible. That's the type of bug I'd want addressed, if it's happening.

Maybe right conditions for that choice spot ended before you found to correct spot? Just an idea.

Conditions on choice, in the race lands - New one on me :D

Had some funny results last night:

Prospecting upto Choice - no spots
Prospection Choice only - spots appeared
Prospecting upto Excellent - spots appeared

I wonder if it just the 'Upto Choice' stanzia? (However it does work most of the time!)

Yes, there are some spots like this ;)

As for tracking, seems to work ok most of the time, but not always.

Verdant Heights -> Upper Bog -> Between Fearing Fens @ Slough of the Demon

Choice & Excellent Buo fiber can be found at this spot (With Ginkin [Supreme Boss Gingo] dead of course :0) with the following conditions: Winter, Daytime, Fair

If these conditions aren't met, neither the choice or excellent buo fibers can be prospected at that location (in that particular deposit). 50-100 meters away a separate choice buo fiber deposit can be prospected though.

Be careful of the Wyac and Kinagor that travel through there...it's winter as of this posting :0).
