Re: free ryzom?
There are a lot of trialers attracted by the news in all the Free Soft world. Usually, this people involves a lot in this things, so they try to change our thoughs. The problem is that, most of them, don't know almost nothing of the game, least of the community, and probably, if ryzon doesn't go to GPL will go and don't come back.vguerin wrote:Another new account made to publish rubbish and propoganda... this is trash and ryzom.org will be the death of our game, only giving life to open source folks... I'm think that some of this people event hasn't play yet.
The problem we say from the beguin, I think: Is this for Ryzom, or for Free Software? I think that Ryzon.org Founders go for Ryzom, but all the people that join then (The Ryzom.org Community) go for Free Software. And that's the main problem.
Re: free ryzom?
I have to agree. I cannot see anything good coming from this project, from a business pov or a game player pov. I think the results of the poll indicate this is a common feeling as well.vguerin wrote:Another new account made to publish rubbish and propoganda... this is trash and ryzom.org will be the death of our game, only giving life to open source folks... I still remember Xavier's attempt at forum moderation, jeez I hate to think what it would be like if someone zapped his power stick and he ended up with even more power *shudder*

Re: free ryzom?
I have edited out my post, which obviously was not welcome for a reason I don't understand. My apologies if it violated some unspoken rule of the community forums.vguerin wrote:Another new account made to publish rubbish and propoganda... this is trash and ryzom.org will be the death of our game, only giving life to open source folks... My account was not made to publish rubbish and propaganda. I hadn't given Ryzom much thought at all until I read about Ryzom.org, because until now I have mostly been focused in text-based virtual worlds of the Iron Realms flavour (I was a heavy player of a roleplaying MUD called Lusternia for the past two years, as an example). I have always been interested in finding a quality graphical MMORPG that has the same depth and roleplay that begins to approach the immersion possible in MUDs, but until now have found nothing that warrants more than a brief dabble of a few days of simple treadmill gaming.
When I read that here was a community that was so devoted to this world as to band together to save it from commercial death it really amazed me, and therefore I decided to give Atys a go to see just what it was that had inspired such dedication. I've only been playing for two days now (I haven't been past level 13 in any skill because I keep deciding to change my appearance *cough*), but I really, really like the level of detail and beauty with which it is crafted. I'm Xaveos in the Cho server, if anyone wishes to berate me personally.
I fully intend to subscribe when it becomes possible, whether that is sending money to Ryzom.org or to whichever company takes over, but I know that with a non-profit organization devoted to the first ultra high quality open source virtual world there is such potential for a really groundbreaking phenomenon to occur. I am really excited about the possibilities, and that is why it is the most interesting topic for me at the moment. Maybe I shouldn't have posted my opinions at all being so new, but that is really what I think, and I didn't think it would cause too many problems because it was obvious I was a newbie just starting out.
Anyway, I'll try to keep out of the forums and stay in game from now on, I hope to eventually meet some of you in there. Once again, sorry if I have violated some of the terms of service.
Edit: Also, I cannot vote in the poll, nor do I think it would be fair for me to do so even if I could. So I can't skew results. I was just going to engage in the discussion, but will bow out.
Edit again: Oh, and in case I didn't make it clear enough, that quote isn't mine, its just one I found that I thought brought an interesting dimension to the topic. Assuming the person it claims to be is who it seems, and I see no reason for it not to be, I thought it was pertinent. My mistake.

Re: free ryzom?
Okay, I'm one of the 'trialers attracted by the news'. I had never heard of the game until I read about the news of the .org trying to buy the code (don't really keep up on MMOs). I would just like to say a few things (please do not take this as from the ryzom.org community, take it as a single persons opinion who agrees with what ryzom.org is trying to accomplish):mithur wrote:The problem we say from the beguin, I think: Is this for Ryzom, or for Free Software? I think that Ryzon.org Founders go for Ryzom, but all the people that join then (The Ryzom.org Community) go for Free Software. And that's the main problem.
1) I do not think that ryzom.org is the *best* option. This I'm very conflicted about. From my computer geek side I would *love* to see the Ryzom game released under GPL. Do I think it's the best option for "the game"? No. There is no way that the .org community would be able to compete with a Multi-million dollar company in producing content, etc.. for the game.
1a) If no company will buy the code (that would actually run the game), then yes; I would hope that ryzom.org would be able to purchase the code. In the short time that I have been playing the game (trial) I've completly enjoyed it, and would hate to see it 'trashed', or bought just for the 'IP' value never to see the light of day again. It's to good for that.
2) I don't believe that everyone that joined the ryzom.org community goes for the 'Free Software' side, though I'm sure that quite a few do. I personally believe that many, if it does open up, will try to do what is best for "the game" as a whole (opinions will differ here I'm sure). That includes keeping with the original Lore, etc... Some will, I'm sure, just want to take it run their own shard, and never think about where it came from again.
3) _I_ don't want to change your thoughts, feeling, whatever. *If* the game does go to ryzom.org, I would hope that you'd express what you want to see happen there. If you do not want to continue playing, it's your choice; If you want to go into 'wait and see' mode, again it's your choice. But I'd like to see everyone who is part of the SoR community voice their opinion. I've read many of the threads; I've been trying to read up on some of the Lore and background on the game as I have time. *All of you* have 'lived' it and helped build it, and your input would be invaluable to _anyone_ that takes over the game. Atys is *your* world; Tell whoever gets it that.
I'll freely admit that I know very little about the game, but as I've said I have been trying to learn as time allows. Being stuck off the Mainland does limit what I can do (in game), but I'm _trying_ to learn. The factions stuff really doesn't make a lot of sense game wise, but again I'm stuck in a small area to try figuring it out in (I mean really, if they dislike each other so much why would they get together to 'teach' members of the other faction?).
Anyway, the above just sparked an uncontrollable need to post for some reason. Above all, just remember that no matter what happens *you* are the ones that bring the world alive. If there are no players, there's no reason for the world to exist... No matter who gets it, give 'em a chance (even if it's Sony ... ya never know.... ;P )

PS. Sorry if the above is kinda detached and outta order... 2:30 ... gotta sleep

I had started to write down a reasonable answer, throwing in some thoughts about the notions of "literal meanining", "possession", "community", "participation", but I thought that other than explaining the obvious, I would sound preachy, patronizing and so on!kaetemi wrote:At the moment, the game is not yours, you're nothing more than a user.
Instead, my coffee was cold this morning (who cares!) and since I had some popcorn left from the PvP thread I thought I could feed the troll! I considered your post nitpicking and trolling, nothing really constructive, and focusing on one aspect that does not deserve even commenting on.
The somehow sad thing is that you are well aware of it. I may not agree with DT sometimes and I usually don't like the tone of his posts (heh he's well aware of it ! ) but other than being vocal and strong minded he raises some points. Argue and comment on them, rather than being snobbish about the menaing of "our"
