Im going to pre-empt the lore here, and explain in simple terms just why the world functions the way it does.. the Kami and Karavan may try to silence me as neither wants Homins to know too much

Think of Atys as a garden..

The Matis have taken their Biological expertise, and striven to recreate <snip> the Garden in the centre.

... the Zorai are too focused on their 'inner spiritual development' (ie.. too lazy) to look after their land, resulting in a tangled overgrown mess, (like the nasty part of the yard behind the shed).

The Fyros have overused and mistreated their patch of the world, letting the plants die of neglect whilst using it as a parking lot and workshop.

And of course we have a very nice water feature, complete with gnomes.
