Nope. Xavier is very conversant with the IT world and is a fierce defender of Open Source in France. He's been following the Ryzom project for a long time and knows the legal system better than most of us here. ryzom.org is in the loop to bid on Ryzom if/when the time comes. Xavier has been the only real source of information since October 1st, and as far as I can tell, all the rest is rumor...

There's official, and there's credible... go figure.

Hmm, and I'm sure GameForge agreed with an "official" written contract to pay the entire purchase sum, not just 10%. :p

But to digress from the innocent nitpick... my lot in this matter lies with Xavier. Some may disagree with his ideas*, but he seems to have been working harder than any group or individual to keep the Ryzom dream alive. Who's to say another company wouldn't make the same B.S. promises as GameForge just to abandon us another year from now? If quick to dismiss Ryzom.org, keep in mind the bogus IRC chats, pitiful communication, poor development choices, and outright deceit of the last company that jumped in to "save" us.

*Note: I actually have very little clue why there's opposition to the Free Ryzom campaign; the only bits I can remember reading somewhere may have involved concerns over developer commitment? If there's a good argument for the opposition, I'd love to hear it. ;)

*grins*

In passing, you'll note I never wrote Xavier was an official source of information, only that he was the best source I have found.

As for the Open Source bit, yes, people are afraid of the unknown, and would rather have Ryzom run by a major company with a big bank account. That's understandable. We all want the game to last.

Although Open Source is often equated with amateurism, that doesn't have to be the case, as countless Open Source development projects have shown, that often prove to be solid and useful. I think that Ryzom, if it survives, will have grown stronger from the mistakes of the past. And I want to believe an Open Source Ryzom will have as much of a chance to last and expand than a Sony Ryzom to last and stagnate.

That being said, I miss my digging.

Well, as for open source..

How many of you use Fire Fox? nix based OS? Theres 2 very good examples of successful open sourcing right there :)

What would you rather have?

A company only out to make money, that will succumb to the demands of the masses, and only really care about about their own pockets?

Or an organization of devoted fans, trying to shape a world into the best it could ever possibly be, just out of passion?

personally id go for the later, and thus i hope that the .org group succeeds :)

The problem is that different players have different ideas about how Ryzom should be "run", so to speak. There are PvPers, RPers ... and need I mention the diggers? Sooner or later yubos will have lasers shooting out their eyes.

Also, some users want to see some of the creatures and armour in Nevrax's original concept designs to be implemented, like that giant elephant thing. Personally I don't dig them much, so how do we decide what to add and what not to? This is the reason why a company that knows what in the name of Atys they're doing ... unfortunately, Gameforge isn't it.

That being said, I've heard a Ryzom run by the players would mean those of us who can draw could contribute to the concept designs, and those that are familiar with coding and 3D-rendering would help turn those dreams into reality ... holy heck sign me up!
