It seams you aren't tryeing to understand what bmaniac is saying!
Even if you are getting to level 100 melee you won't have someting back from the game. At least no thing that idetyfies your level.
Wouldn't it be great if the animations, on for example increased damage or accurate attack, would look different at higher level than at the lower? Or you would get some new type of attack? Magic has different animations at higher level.
And it would also be cool if the q100 armour had some extra details than the q10. I know they do if you make medium quality stuff but than again: Some extra details on higher q medium qulity items than on lower would make the game more vissual I think.
I can agree on the issue were it feels you won't have any personal reward for gaining levels but in some extend you have your reward: You won't get killed as easely and you can get further away from the cities. Even still I agree whit bmaniac; A vissual reward would be on its place!

You are in a good guild, that is half the battle in this game, You have to realise that this game is designed to have a shelf-life of 8 years, therefore, they have to pace the addition of content accordingly.
Level 80 is a pretty high level, but to get higher comfortably you need to team hunt in Dyron, then you will level up quickly, but you wont comfortably be able to solo Dyron or Thesos mobs until you are 100+.
The reward in the game (I find) is the comradeship built up, on these team hunts, You fight/die together and have a laugh, you also make youself more proficant at the game, the content that will be added, quests, Guild vs Guild, the Outposts etc. I find all of these very intriguing and cannot wait for them to happen.
To make the game more suitable for yourself, set goals/targets etc. Try tanking/pulling on the hunts, get a few levels in Healing to make youself more versatile to your guild/team. Go to places on your own (Dyron (easy if you know the way) Thesos (easy-ish and pretty luck-dependant) Matis a challenge best left to a group that is big enough, that when things go a bit pearshaped can punch their way out of the problem, but learn the route and what mobs will aggro and what wont and try to plot your course accordingly, It is very satisfying to make your way to any of these places solo or in a group (IMO) and allows you to wallow in the PvE aspect of the game.

So basicaly the game is what you make of it, if you got to 80, then you have the perserverance to really excel at this game, just try to set goals etc. and see what happens.
I hope you stay, you seem like a nice person, present your points intelligently and listen to other peoples points, are willing to ask for help. Good Luck and enjoy ! :)

So Melee is what I have been focusing on, with some defensive magic on the side for healing, ressing and helping others.

"Where is the reward for all this work?"
Well that's a very good question. I don't think there is much of a reward in this game in the sense you mean. It's a shame because I love getting new shinny armour or trying out new skills and going to new places or fighting amazing new beasts too.

But this game, as you know, is a bit different from the rest.

I think everyone in this game has come to the same conclusion as you at some point. Well I have anyway. I then had to think hard why I play. Those that keep playing find something other than the usual quest/reward and level/gain cycles to do. And it takes a lot to find out what that is.

I hope you find your place here.

bmaniac wrote: I know that Ryzom is a group oriented game, and teaming up and venturing out into the world is great fun. I am in a great Guild, *waves* hi Samsara, that are always willing to help you out no matter what. But After these two weeks and 80 melee levels I'm starting to ask myself:

I am still "stuck" at my starting town (no not noob island) and trying to venture out to the nearest respawn point from there is suicide still, until around twice my current level. The world I've seen has all been covered in sand, and I have no idea what the rest of the game world looks like, because I still can't go anywhere.

Where is MY reward for all this work?
Hi Bmaniac,

First of all, you are in a great guild... Samsara is very cool and takes care of its members. If I was a fyros I would certainly join. I am just a little silly tryker, who likes to tease Samsara and is acting as mascotte :)

To go beyond Fyros is something else... It needs planning and good cooperation. Today i helped Samsara to reach Zorai, THROUGH THE ROOTS!
I never would haved dared that myself, but with the help of Diggin, J and Kostika it was a very sucsesfull trip. (Altough I still wonder if they needed me, or if I was just along to bring luck...)

If you want to go to Matis or Tryker (Or Zorai if you missed the trip) I certainly like to help, but it is a dangerous journey and it can get you lots of DP... But in my opinion it was always worth it...

Then about your last question: Where is MY reward for all this work?

What about FUN?
That is the only reason I play this game. I will never become the best warrior, mage or forager.. I just like it, I like the community, I like the
people, I like my guild, I like the mobs, etc...

My reward is FUN!

[QUOTE]

I understand what he is saying. He is one of my guild members after all. But my point was that hopefully we are part of his reward for playing. The guild itself. Our friendship and fun. Sure it'd be kinda nifty to get special stuff, but I personally am not after such things exclusively. To me, enjoying the game and the people in my guild are the reward. For too long I've played in MMOs with nothing but a**holes and L33T kiddies. Too long have i not enjoyed online games. To me the reward is those who i get to have fun with.

(Sxarlet you bring us all luck and always great to have along.)

Thank you all for your replies.
Yes the Samsara are a guild full of great people, I have been very fortunate in finding them(being found by, thanks Dig). But that's not what I'm after here. The reward for me in Ryzom, the reason to pay for it and stay after the trial is the people. All the great helpful people I've met.
Crafters who say: "Sure, you can have the armor now, just pay me whenever you get the money"
O.O Try that in any other mmorpg and you'll be scammed or worse. The community in Ryzom is amazing, nothing short of it.

But my concern is with something else, ethania got my idea right. Sure I have fun, and sure grouping or guild fighting is great fun, and rewarding in it's own right. But for my character and me as a player, nothing has changed since I started the game, I look the same, sound the same, do the same moves and actions, and fight virtually the same mobs. To me, I have not done anything, 80 levels and not a single thing has changed.

ethania is right on target, something needs to visually change when you gain levels, you need to learn new moves, I don't care if they don't do more damage or anything, as long as they look different. Your armor needs to get more details, whatever they are, emblems or engravings depending on the QL of your armor, just something. Anything to visually show you as a player that your character is improving. That is the reward I am after for levelling.

The personal rewards of having fun and meeting great people and making friends, that's something different, that's what will keep me playing. I would still like to get a reward of some sort for gaining levels, something I can see or hear.

hurry up, m8, i'm 94.5 :P

hmmm... there's new mobs to fight after the igaras (frahars...), but afaik, neither the landscape nor your avatar don't change much till 250 :)

there's some lack of variety with melee characters in ryzom, yes. As someone has told, you get a bit more thrill with magic.

but all things told, i think ryzom is quite unfinished. enjoy the mobs, the great skill system, and the nice people in it, because it IS ryzom (no more no less) :D

reminds me a bit of horizons btw.... nice game, .... then what? the content sucked :)

ac2 has content every month and was beautiful to explore... then what? the skill system sucked :)

i'm waiting for patch 2, but ryzom's mark indeed seems not to be reward oriented... just providing a nice universe to play with. heh. Sounds nice enough to me, as long as you're not sold anything else by nevrax.

cya in game! :)

Reward, there is none as such (ala loot) at this stage. I find that the only way to generate a feeling of reward is to set goals for yourself. Recently I bought zorai crafting skills, so I am madly running around the jungle improving my jungle forage so that I can make zorai gear... this is a self satisfaction reward. I am close to being 125 mage (10 levels to go), that will be satisfying when I get there and get new spells... etc etc Set targets and try to achieve them.

One target I set myself early in the game was to get to all four lands. It took me awhile to do, and MANY MANY death points but I finally did it, mostly solo (Warcry ressed me in UnderSprings to complete that part). Learning to travel around Ryzom is an ESSENTIAL skill. Understanding mob agro (which do and dont), agro range, using your radar to gauge distances and gaps between mobs, using speedup at critical points, or invulnerability or melee aura to get that extra few seconds of travel to gain a spawn... all of these skills and judgements are required to be a good player. You will most likely find that a few people in Samsara tend to lead groups around, these people have the knack of knowing or seeing paths that avoid agro (or they are just lucky)... watch and learn, practise till you get good at it.

I hear a lot of people say that traveling is 'impossible', well if they think the surface is impossible they shouldnt even look in PR. It ISNT! impossible, it is just hard... and one reward you do get is a tp ticket... I think I have about 30 different tp tickets now, so I can get around pretty safely now. :)

there are some ways to see the difference between low level characters and higher level characters:

1. titles

2. armor colors
(beige < purple, green and turquoise < blue and red < black and white)

3. the thing you are killing
(other people can see you are a high level when you kill something high level)

4. the more expensive haircuts and the cheaper ones
(low levels won't often have the expensive ones, high levels will have more different (cheap and expensive), and change more often)

Just put a lvl 20 next to a lvl 150, you will clearly see the difference..

(also: when a lvl 20 joins a high level guild, he might start looking like a high level (items from guild crafters, ...()))
