Just telling us that the server is now up doesn't address the issues raised here, and frankly is a bit insulting. Again, many of us were waiting, because when the server went down we were told it was just for a "reboot" and we expected it would be back up in a few minutes. As it turns out the downtime was at least 4 hours. Some kind of notice that the downtime would be prolonged would have been much appreciated. This was prime evening gaming time, and people were hoping to get back on before they needed to go to sleep. Frankly, I would have gone to bed an hour earlier if I'd known the server wouldn't be up until after 1AM EST.

Also, I've read the announcement forum and this forum, and there is no explanation given for this prolonged downtime. Could you at least tell us now, in retrospect, why the server was down for so long?

Thanks.

Personally, I have become complacent (if that is even the right choice of words) to the server outages.

If you haven't noticed by now, the following rules apply to Ryzom when it comes to server outages.

***
All outages will have a standard of NO ETD, therefore there is no responsibility on there behalf to actually have the server back up in a given time frame, specifically since some or most of the time when the server is down other than a standard patch, they won't know why its out, so they are fixing it.

All outages should here'in be considered 'Features', and thus, anytime the server is down, just assume you have time to watch a movie or two, go out on a date, get pizza, or hotwings from the local hooters. (you will be happier)

No where in the EULA does it state that they are bound by any laws to tell us when the server is up or down, only that playing the game connecting to there server is a privlage, just like its a privlage to use the message board, and not a right.

You are paying for the right to use the Client to connect to the server, none of the game is your intellectual property, they can, at any time, remove the servers and your connection without any inclanation as to why.

Ryzom is only bound by French Law, as it states in the EULA under item 21.

***********************

With all that said, true it would be nice to see some sort of "REAL" ETD or estimated uptime, but honestly, your not going to see it, this go's back to the first day when we all asked for real server status, instead of the main page status showing the server is open or available, but its been down for hours.

This is not one of there priorities, and the GM's have no control over any of it.

I love how everyone somehow thinks this is a mission critical system and that it's somehow unacceptable that it's down for be it 5 mins or 5 hours.

When we lose power to the entire city here, the power company does not give us an ETD! Why should a private 'entertainment' company be held to higher standards than city services?!?!

This is a false comparison. The power company is a monopoly; of course they provide poor service (although my power company does tell me when they expect my power to come back after an outage). No, Ryzom is not "mission critical". So what? Does that mean we shouldn't care if it's up or not? Maybe by that reasoning we shouldn't waste time playing at all....we can just do "mission critical" stuff all the time.

Ryzom is entertainment. We all have only a limited amount of time for our entertainment, but we have many choices. Poor service over time will lose customers, this is no monopoly, there is tons of competition.

If you went to a movie theater and 1/4 times, the movie stopped playing in the middle, would you say: "oh, nothing mission critical about this" and forget it? I suspect you would find a different movie place to go to.

Seconded. Some sort of estimated downtime would make life easier for those of us who really should go to bed at a decent hour but would rather play just a bit longer. ;) I'd be thrilled to get simply "more/less than an hour" or even, "it's going to take longer than a simple reboot". Anything at all. I know that y'all ain't really obligated to say anything at all, but it sure would be appreciated. Never mind the cynicism below. I'll gladly chance it.

*scratches his head*
Ya know Doc, I never thought of that, when I pay to view a movie, no where does it state that they have to play the entire movie for me in a single sitting...

I only paid to view the movie in there theaters with an estimated start time and an estimated end time.

Funky...

On second thought, I am also one of those people with a life schedule, I know what I am doing from day to day, so if I know I am playing Ryzom from 7pm est to say 12am est, and the game is not available, I know I will be watching TV, if nothing is on, I also know that I will goof off on my PS2 playing Bards Tale.

I just find its easier not to actually worry about things I can't control, I can't control the Ryzom servers, nor the client for that matter.

Just because we can do something, doesn't neccesarly mean we should do something, when in fact we could be doing something else.

When we can't do what we want to do, we then can choose to beat on it until it works, or go find something else to do.

Look at it another way, what else would you spend your $15 a month on?
If your a smoker, that is maybe the price of 1 carton of smokes to last you 1 week, so what do you do for the other 3 weeks?
If your a drinker, that would last you 3 cases of beer, for 2 nights of drinking, what would people do then for the other 28/29 days of the month?

Even with the length of the outages, I get my $15 a month of play time in.
But then again, I am probably clinically insane and don't know it yet.
