With the combination of more ammo per combine and the increased rate of fire, it does allow for increased damage over time and not having to spend as much time digging up the mats overall.
Unfortunately, like you said, pistol/rifle ammo is too heavy. With MA, jewelry, rifle and about 70 stacks of ammo, I'm at 220 bulk. I try carrying any more ammo, and my speed facter starts to drop, as do my success rates for any given action. Technically I'd have enough bulk to carry another 800 rounds, but then my speed factor would be down around 1% and I couldn't hit a suckling yubo for any damage.
Sure I could carry the mats for 100 stacks of bullets, since mats have 0 weight, while a stack of bullets weighs 6.4 with my current combination (that alone doesn't make sense). But having to stop and craft bullets is rather unneccessary and shouldn't have to be done on a regular basis while hunting. Especially considering the degrade rate on crafting bullets is very crappy.
Please, Nevrax, check your math skills on this. 4 mats, which have a total bulk of 2, and weigh 0, are used to create 40 bullets, which have a bulk of 4, and weigh a grand total of 10kg+. On a physics level this is impossible, and on a plain common sense level it's about bassackwards as you can get.
Nevrax
is making improvements on ranged. As solo with a high forage in comparison to my ranged fight skill, it is a viable persuit. In a group situation where taking a time out to spend crafting bullets just to stay functioning, it is not.
The above applies to pistol(which is even worse in group due to a higher consumption of ammo) and rifle.
Autolauncher/Launcher are only good for a cheap thrill in taking out a herd of critters you won't get reasonable xp from.
