There's also a client side run speed hack that anyone interested in actual run speed should know about. Before it started popping up, characters would all run just about the same speed. My Tryker seemed to run just barely faster than Zorai, who all ran at the exact same speed (I had early contact with a lot of Zorai early on :) . This hack of course makes all our observations worthless, kind of:/ At least you never know if someone's speed is due to the hack, unless you trust them. A lot of people knew about it, and a lot are probably still using it.

Should be noted that GMs are aware of this and look for it. As noticable as it can be with other people around (or an invis GM following you), I wouldn't bother trying to use it. (I'm not going to bother with the ethics on this one, since it'd have no effect on the people who would cheat anyway :P )

I seem to run fast too. I'm taller than average but not by a whole lot. I don't know my fps rate, but I'm running a P4 2.8 with a Radeon 9700 Pro. Not high-end by any means, but not low either. I do have a disproportionately large leg bulk. Could that be it?

Oopsie Neiana - ya got me wondering if us girls with real ones (and who know they can be a bother) all made our fem alts with smaller busts and if it's just the guys who went with the "omg her feet don't even touch the floor anymore" size.

Too bad I can't blame this one on anybody ;) http://gucomics.com/archives/view.php?cdate=20041110 - which all he'd have to do is substitute Ryzom med armor on a fem to make it a SoR joke. Hmmm - perhaps new melee skill trees to follow.... To put this mess back on topic - maybe the armor would help the girls run faster? I know I'd be running at warp back to the vendor to get caster pants!!

***edit*** Keep scrolling next on the gu comics RLOL

It used to be the case that you ran quicker if in 1st person than you did in 3rd person. Not sure if this still is the case.

OK, so we got one theory that tallest chars run slower, and the opposite that it makes you faster.

FPS is not as likely to be important since we have at least one person getting 30 outside cities.

Could it be network connection dependent?

We'll have to suggest a Homin marathon race at the next big event, by race and then between races. Maybe we can even use that to settle our future racial conflicts :)

I'll try and send you a Tell you the next time I'm in Trykerland, but it seems like you hardly have any land in a line straight enough to race. At least no place where you wouldn't run right into a mob's gaping mouth. :)

I don't live in the lakes anymore, I moved to the Jungles. :)

I have direct evidence that height has no effect on speed, as anyone who groups with us knows. Jinari and Jivalax are identical in almost every way, designed on computers that were sitting next to eachother at the same time to be twins. Their skills are also within a few levels of eachother on almost everything. Yet, Jinari runs faster than Jivalax. Jinari is on a computer with a faster processor and newer graphics card. (though ram, and all else is about equal) On the rare occasion where Jivalax is played on the faster unit, Jiv runs faster than Jin. I believe this is almost conclusive evidence that height is not the deciding factor in run speed.

The effects of a slower computer are also evident on speedup powers, my speed3 takes me less distance than Jin's speed2. For SoR it seems obvious faster computers are better.

This evidence is troublesome in deed, means I need to go out and buy a mega'cray server with an ungodly amount of mips, so I can run uber like.

i probably shouldn't mention this, but the speed hack isn't a hack at all...

its just a config change (not that i use it, but i looked into it after reading this)

*Edited by Cerest* Sorry, just enough info. Be careful.

It helps i you have a 3.0 Ghz P4 HyperThreading, GFORCE 5600 Ultra, 1gb DDR2 HyperX 400 ram, RAID 0 10000rpm WD Sata Harddrives, water cooled Koolance Case, Asus P4C-800-E Deluxe Mobo, and Machine without 900 spyware apps with pop-ups and 40 programs running in background like Yahoo and AIM and other worthless junk.

I have been wondering why i run so fast, this explains it...
Again i didn't mess with my FSP cap, or turn down my settings.

That should be easy to fix server-side. Just keep track of when the last “run” packet was received – if it’s too soon, then put it in a query and discard any additional ones until it is ready.

They had a similar bug in UO, except it was a hack to the client itself which removed the client-enforced wait between steps.

Never ever assume the client is enforcing anything on the player :-)
