Sorry SP means skill points (used for buying new skills/stats). Sap is the name of the 'magic power/mana' type stuff in SoR. Once you know what your doing you can work with very little downtime, especially in a team.

In a team other mages can 'heal' your Sap. Solo you can use a self healing ability to heal your Sap.

The skill tree splits into Offensive Magic and Defensive Magic at level 21. So you have to level Off Magic and Def Magic seperately. Each level of magic gives you 10 SP so if your an Off mage and you decide to do a bit of healing, say 3 levels worth to level 24, you get a 'bonus' 30 SP to spend. These can be spent on any skills available at your level not just on Def magic skills.
