Haha

Thanks for all your useful insights into the subject !

I see I have 3 main choices:

(1) get a new gf
(2) get married and act frisky
(3) stop playing SoR (ahem yeah right !)

so looks like number 2 is the most expensive but has most long term sustainability. As then maybe I could give up work and game all day !!

hehe

ooo - I just remembered - my first words the night before I came to mainland -
"Prepare yourselves - I'm coming in !!"

Xorte

Well, this is the worst you can do^^

My wife plays more than I do, so no problem for me. I easily can play 20-40 hours a week if i wanted.

You already said it yourself. Watching TV is OK, sitting behind a PC is not. The explanation is real easy. Either they have the feeling you are with them when watching TV (when my wife wasn't into gaming, she used to say that. Then I put on a DVD to watch and she would fall asleep within 30 minutes...) or -and this is my guess- they don't understand it. Now here's the difficult part. Trying to make them understand that this is 2004 (almost 2005), that online gaming is a social activity and does not really differ from more commonly known social activities like bowling, tennis and stuff like that. That it is YOUR hobby and that it is kind of strange that she won't let you do the things YOU like. All in good balance. Not understanding it is NOT a reason to let you not do it.

--Story which relates to this--
One night my gf was out and i had the whole night to play Warcraft III. I already knew this and we would play that night with some people from work. We were actually with 4, so we started some nice 2v2's. All of a sudden my gf's aunt (who lives in the same street as we do) drops by. I say "HI" (my pc's were in the living room back then) and proceed to play telling here "I'll make some coffee after the game".

She didn't understand that (and left angry), because i didn't turn "the damn thing off" to go socialize. I later tried to explain to her and asked her the following: "If you are playing tennis with 3 friends and I drop by, would you step of the court to go and socialize with me?". Naturally she claimed this to be something different. But it's actually NOT. I asked her if she would have understood it if the 3 people i played would actually be in my room when she dropped by. Well, that was something different as well she told me. I told her to wake up to modern ages and realize we're not in the 70-ies anymore. It took like 4 or 5 of those conversations (and the fact that her daughter discovered MSN. Moewhahahaha) before she finally could see and understand my view.

Good luck to you! Gogo educate her. She might not want to join you, but she should understand you.

Give her the wake-up call.

Good story Maroo. And good point. I don't know what I'd do if I wasn't into games and computers and I'm lucky my husband is too.

What do normal people do with all their time..... :D

Xorte, your first post was like reading an extract of my life!

I rush home from work to play (get home 30 mins before g/f does), thats just enough time to boot the pc, log into the game, chat to some mates and start to find a team.

By the time i have found a team and we are mob bashing etc, the g/f comes in and moans that i'm always on the PC. This usually results in me logging off just to prevent an argument!!

Sat and Sunday mornings, usually get up as early as i can (around 8am, later if hungover :P ). Play on ryzom until g/f gets up around 11am.

Mind you, all she seems to want to do in the evening is watch crap TV (usually the soaps <groan>).

Oh well. I don't moan as much when she goes round her mums anymore!

You know, it's funny how many people make basically the same comment - their partners are quite happy for us to sit through Earbenders or Neighbores or whatever but you ask them to come and watch you play and the answer you'll inevitably get is "but it's boring just watching you play".

I've tried to explain to people that how is it any different watching a game or watching TV, except that the game is interactive and actually requires the use of more brain cells than the usual TV ones that control lifting your leg to fart occassionally, and that a MMOG is far more social than watching a film in a cinema (no in-cinema chat channels to my knowledge).

My missus and I have an understanding - she does her thing, I do my thing and occassionally we meet in the kitchen or bathroom. That sounds awful I know, but it's the diversity that keeps us going. She lets me bore her silly talking about games, and I let her bore me silly talking about horses and stuff.

It's called mutual understanding. Next time your partner whines at you, tell them that it's their turn to be understanding... amazing how quickly they change their tune when they realise they're the ones being unreasonable. All you need to do is throw a few psycho-babble phrases at them from a book on relationships and it makes you sound all caring and open and makes them feel rotten :-)
