I have a feeling they knew about the issues and have been working on a fix. However they did not want to delay the push anymore because of so many people complaining about not having patch 1.
It was a lose lose type of thing. In my opinion the lesser of two evils would have been to say "We are delaying patch 1 due to concerns from the players .. blahblah". At least this would have shown that they care about the players. Instead they didnt respond to the players concerns before the patch. Pushed bad design changes live and then played hero by promissing a patch the next day.
If I was not already in my first month (as of 4 days ago), I would have canceled my account lastnight.

Somehow I think delaying the patch would have caused a lot less angry players. Especially all the ones logging in yesterday that had no idea about a new patch and the horrors it entailed.
Its not really a lose-lose situation. By pushing the patch early, with all its bugs, they have created more work for themselves (developers) and the CSR/GMs.
Instead of getting a polished patch that people would be impressed by (even if it nerfed stuff), we get a patch that is half-assed and bug ridden. Which type of patch do you think players are more likely to handle calmly? This isn't beta anymore, people are paying for this and many have shown they won't tolerate it.

You are correct
On a side note maybe its a stress test on the GMs to see how well they can hold up under preassure for the shear stupidity putting this patch in when they knew they shouldnt

Or maybe it is some sort of new MMORPG study that is being done to see just how quick you can lose what little paying customer base you have. Not sure

Well, when you have a 20 page thread the day before the patch, shouldn't you at least look your patch over again to make sure that its completely ok?? That would have been a big red light flashing right there for me if I was a developer.
I wish my customer base was this responsive, I usually have to wait weeks before anyone complains about a problem and its usually after they lived with it for a few weeks.

There were many changes in patch 1 that didn't have people comlaining though. Ones that were needed: spell changes, crafting changes (albeight they need to still get that fix out so people 51+ in melee weapon craft can get xp from amps), ranged weapon changes (takes only 4 mats now to make a stack of rifle ammo woohoo, hunting with a ranged weapons is more practical now!), the new vendor system, the addition of higher quality mats, the readjusting of the bulks for packers/appts/guild halls (all set to 500 I believe now, haven't checked a guild hall yet), the 'kill tribe X' has also been fixed, only need to kill X members of the tribe to complete the task, not clear them out X times.
And since they are reworking the combat+harvesting right now, all in all, it's wasn't a bad thing. Sure 24 hrs of a much more difficult system for fighting and harvesting, but there was alot of other things they felt necessary that were in with patch 1, so hence why they didn't delay it, leaving all those other things out and having people complain about patch 1 being delayed.

Today's patch was on the test servers YESTERDAY. They already knew it was so bad when they patched, that they had it waiting. But why patch (or patch those parts) at all when you have an idea of the disaster it is?
and frankly, it was all us people you complain about who "told all of you so" when this patch was still on the test server.

I dunno about you, but I would rather have my customers complain about it being delayed for a few days then having my customers cancel their accounts because of something release with issues you are already aware of.

well i think that it was pressure from outside (non-player base) sources that made them push it out unfinished...many of the 'fixes' are not thing that could have been done overnight so im sure they were working on them and just couldn't get them out wiht the patch that the source was forcing them to release yesterday...now lets just get past all of the flaming and crap and get back to looking forward to patch 2 and content and getting leveled back up again

ya I canceled 1 hour after patch yesterday. I'm sure I'm not the only one. Shows you how fast these mmorpg's CAN get things done when cash is on the line.
stupid nevrax. To bad they lost their street cred.
