You can't compare Nevrax to Mythic by any stretch of the imagination, sorry. Mythic had quite a bit of experience in crafting multiplayer compatible worlds and worked on quite a few games before finally releasing DAoC. Nevrax's game portfolio is empty. They're first "game" was creating an engine for persistent online worlds that later became known as Ryzom.

I remember playing EQ for the first time, and the game grabbed me right off the bat. The stupid little quests, getting leather armor, seeing High Hold Pass for the first time, etc. all had a sense of wonderment.

Cheers

I remember crossing the karanas to high hold pass for the first time too. :)
Only in Ryzom did i get the same kind of thrill actually : When i entered the prime roots for the first time a few weeks ago..

I could be very wrong, but considering where you came from... *shrug*

I would suggest looking at it from a different perspective, because the EQ/L2 perspective really isn't gonna help you out here.

Thank you for that Neiana - the complement is well received!

Thanks for all the replys folks, they do help.

One thing positive about SoR is the community. I'm very impressed with the general feel, mood, and attitude of everyone so far.

As to the opinion that I since I played and liked EQ and L2, I shouldn't even consider SoR....... I know what you mean, but I don't feel like those games define me, so I'm not limiting myself to only games that are "like" them. If I were one of those types, why would I have wasted $50 on this game when EQII and WoW are just around the corner?

Anyway, I'm a little more jazzed about SoR at this point except for the fact that I'm dealing with a really bad Windows crashing problem. Looks like I can't use Sound at all which is a bummer, because I like sound!! Strange too, because I really have a fairly sick computer. Hopefully I can figure that out. ( I do have all updated drivers etc, btw)

Keep the posts coming!! Good stuff...

I am what you call a games junkie, I have literally played over thousands of computer games since I first got my home pc back in 1982. Since then, I have been on pioneering games like NeverWinter Nights on AOL, the Shadows of Yserbius on Imagination Network, The Realm by Sierra on-line, and many of the popular games of today like EQ, UO, AC, AO, DAOC, COH, Jumpgate, EVE, EnB, and many others. One thing I like about this game is that there is a whole alien feel to the game. You are not in a typical fantasy like EQ and you're not quite in a futuristic human Sci-fi like EVE, EnB or AO. This game is quite refreshing and theres a sense of wonder and discovery. The artwork is fantastic and I hope the storyline will be the same. The game system may need a little work but it keeps you busy til you get involved with the plotline. I think there is potential here and I hope it will continue to grow into a popular and exciting RPG.

Will it survive WoW and EQ2? While both game impressed me with graphics and the new NPC speech, I am still not holding my breath that they will be the next big thing. I have many accounts in MMORPGs still active and as long as Ryzom keeps my interest, the account will remain active.

I was slow getting into the MMO world; the only other computer games I had played were the Myst series. For me there is no point in FPS games so that left out all console games (Fame has me interested though, but somebody will have to get the box and the game for me). I lost a friend to EnB until I was dragged, protesting the whole way, into playing that game.

Once I got past the terror of dying and/or failing, I was totally addicted to the game, too. It wasn't until they announced sunset *wipes away a tear* that I went shopping for another MMO.

SoR was the only one that grabbed my interest but I wasn't totally into the game (I did have to get over my grief at losing EnB first) until recently. I have to laugh ... We were out exploring and were attacked by a baying clopper. We almost killed it (4 very n00bish players) but we all died. It was a good fight. Then I looked up at the clock and it was an hour past my bedtime.

Yep, the game has got me now and I'm in for the long haul. If it takes time to develop the game, that's fine with me. The way I look at it, too soon here is too soon gone.

Try this, talk to EVERY npc you see, if they offer missions, take them. You really need to group and hunt, and to do that you really need to get off noob island. Not much reason to group on noobie, no need to really other than magic xp.

I enjoy the game for a simple reason. I am NOT locked into ONE class. Crafting a full suit of armor takes LESS than two weeks time, which is what it took me in EQ, and then the armor I made in EQ was NOT worth the time it took to make it.

This crafting system has roughly 252 different armor looks, including the colors, higher levels of crafting (modi, and higher look MUCH nicer) and even metalic or glowing looks.

EACH race has its OWN weapon looks to it. SO unlike EQ where the ONLY thing that changed was the name over the head (every race had its "class" and look and each of that race was IDENTICAL in everyway, it was like a UNIFORM), this game you start out looking slightly different and once on the mainland, you can become unique (ok maybe 50 on each server like you, but you won't be a CLONE).

I have to say that the thing that really HOLDS me to this game is customer service and the players themselves. Some races noobland is not as warm as others, and if this matters to you...since you are so new...delete that character and change races OR start a new character of another race.

Matis is a bit cool, Tryker due to its materials issues around level 100 ish is a veritable GHOST town, but Fyros is a warm and loving family on noobie. Talk, meet people, socialize. It is FUN and loving, the FEW rude interruptions are normally taken care of by the GM's in a matter of a minute or two TOPS.

I find this UI much easier to deal with than L2. Sorry but point and click was a PAIN. Also I suggest that, while on noobland, you tinker around a bit. Change a few keys around, adjust your micro vegitation, adjust window locations and sizes. TEST and tinker and find what fits you best.

This game DOES have a rather high learning curve, but once you get the hang of it, usually around level 20 all skills, you enjoy it MUCH more. The flexibility to "Pay" for actions with something other than the obvious is one BIG feature for me.

For instance, in the group I was in last night, the MAIN healer had to log off before the rest of us. I am mostly a fighter, but I have heal, just not much sap(mana) SO...I paid for the heals with my OWN hp, that way I could heal for an hour before I had to actually sit and rest a bit. Also I don't have much in the way of stamina, so I pay for my melee actions with other things, a few hp here an "after dodge" credit there and I can keep up and swinging.

I was bored with EQ in a matter of months. By the time each release came out, the rest of the world was a Been there...seen that, done it got the shirt. But this game world is literally growing...next time in game LOOK UP...see that branch, that is the world tree growing. Who knows if where you are will be under ground next year or not, but could be.

I think you hit the nail on the head. This game world isn't quite fantasy, but not quite sci fi. There was a post last week with a Screenie of something found in the prime roots, I thought it looked ALOT like a jet engine rotor (the part with the fan blades). But then I do live VERY near a major international airport, and several small local airports, so I tend to have planes on the brain.

I keep running into things that make me think Anne McCaffrey Pern series (actually if you read ALL of her other voluminous writings, you will realize that everything she EVER wrote all ties together, which was STUNNING to me.) I keep wondering what all will pop out of the woodwork, some rusted hulk of a Karavan ship with a map from Earth? Or some Kami ship from Alpha Centauri? Who knows, that is part of what has me hook line and sinker in this game.

I suggest to EACH new player, read the back story. There is ALOT of the history of the game world on this forum or on the offical web site...READ it. It is not as superfluous as the EQ back story, which IN game contradicted MUCH of the web site stuff and ALL of the manual stuff was so much fluffy crap. Basically after the fabric map of Kunark, I opened up the box, scanned the manual at about 500 WPM then threw manual and box in the garbage before installing the expansion.

This game, I find something new and interesting even in the welcomer mission...FYI if you haven't done that one...DO IT (there is essential back story in each races version of the welcomer.) OH I am not sure if they fixed it or not, but the Zorai's welcomer mission was busted the ONE time I tried that race, so I deleted that character rather quickly.

Please post this info in the tech section of the forum, and do a search for your type of sound card. This happens to be why there is NO music at the moment...sound card conflicts. I was in beta and remember the day they added the songs and CRASH to desktop, it was pretty bad, so they yanked the music and went back to the drawing board with it.

If you like the in game help, you will LOVE the customer service (average responce time in the SECONDS, not hours like EQ, and they are flat out HONEST with you...if they can't help, they say so, not like EQ's CS staff that were trained to run you around in circles until you gave up. I was an EQ guide, I hated that part of the training.) And the Tech support group on the forum is amazing too.

I understand the "getting used to" a game thing. I spent about two years in the Realm, and moving to EQ was a TOUGH move for me, and moving to Horizons wasn't easy, but moving here...after the first week or two was smoother.

Welcome and see you in game.

What I like about Ryzome:

1. It is a rather unique mythos. Lots of work done on the backstory.
2. Not the usual orc, elf, gobblin retread.
3. I can solo to my heart's content. I have yet to group for a fight.
4. The skill system. I like the flexibility alot.
5. No class lockdown. I can be what ever I want to put the time into being.

What I think I'll like about Ryzome (stuff not implemented yet)
1. Guilds creating a real political system
2. Guilds and players having a direct impact on the "culture" that forms on a specific server. (not meaning how nice, friendly ect.. but actual game world influences)
3. An actual purpose built into the game for guilds. (Shadowbane was the only other game I've played that had such, but unfortuanatly, it was too broken for me to want to invest anymore time into)

Visually, Ryzom pleases me. Functionally Ryzom pleases me. Community of Ryzom players pleases me. I guess I just like it.
