Before someone yells "oh noes, open-source, it's going to be chaos!" note that the press release says Winch Gate will remain in full control of Ryzom itself:
Winch Gate intends to incorporate certain code changes and enhancements into the official version of the Ryzom game. All code developed outside Winch Gate's in-house development staff will be thoroughly reviewed to ensure quality standards, stability and security.
So this isn't going to lead to the problem Myst Online: URU Live is experiencing (drama and rifts forming in the community due to disagreement about what kinds of things should be incorporated into the game and what should not).

It already does, and usually between the devs and players more recently.

What the heck does that have to do with anything? Answer: Nothing.

-"Fixed" already little used afflictions by making them even more useless.
-"Fixed" target level display - It just doesn't work, and when this was pointed out to them, rather than just admit defeat they muddle on...
-The API - I'm sure the few web coders in the community love it, and they have created some very nice toys, but given the choice, wouldn't we of prefered they'd worked on some actual content?
-The Feedback, RP, and IG boards - All unheard of by half the population, all unused by half the population, all ill-conceived & poorly implemented, and, all over the place!
-Tattoos, UI Shinies, AFK animations, etc? (All lame junk and a real waste of time considering the many other things they could be working on)
-Kitin Lair - Well omg, what a let down. I'd rather of waited another 5 years for something that wasn't finished off in 5 minutes.

So yes, they've done a fine job of giving us what we want so far. Power to the players! (As they like to claim)

I'd probably have no problem with open source if it weren't for the fact WG don't have the resources for it and as we already know, they couldn't organise a piss up in a brewery. So yeah... It should go well. Not to mention Ryzom doesn't really have much of a following anyway since no one has heard of it. :p
