I think part of the reason that the Matis are interested in being synergetic with Atys is the tradition of the "Great Spirit". The Kami considered Jena the "Kami Superior", before the rise of Maduk, some 50 years ago, Much like Christianity, Jena was considered as "Mother and Holy Ghost". Of course that leaves open a Homin side, which is being filled by the Elias Tryton movement.
Anyway, the Kami movement under Maduk is very young, many of their core beliefs should still be based soundly in the faith they split off of. Jena, is not pro-tech, anti-Atys...the Karavan maybe, but Jena was accepted by both factions as the Creator and the Spirit of the living planet until 30 years before players entered Atys. So, anyway, my point would be that the Matis are interested in living things because their faith and culture demand it.
