One thing to be said for the boring grind, and that is, EVERY game has it! Some games take longer to get boring than others, but they all do eventually. Ryzom is my 5th MMORPG game after EQ, SWG, Lineage2, and CoH, and I can say from experience, they all get boring after awhile. I am finding the same to be true for Ryzom.
So, there must be something else that keeps people in games like this, not just Ryzom, but all of the popular MMO games, unless they are just gluttons for punishment. For me, that other thing is Role Play, and the success of RP is due, in part at least, to the success with which a game supplies an RP backdrop for player stories. Since many people are familiar to one degree or another with the story and conflict of the Star Wars universe, it is an easy game to RP to. The story of Ryzom is much more esoteric and less accessable to the average player. How well players are able to integrate their RP with the story backdrop provided in Ryzom is yet to be seen, imo.
