Hummm, could it be that they are already working on a new engine ? I have seen this sort of thing a few times.

Giving access to the source code of the current engine... I hope they have some anti-cheat/hack planned.

What about using the source code for something else then a game ? Like a Virtual Reality engine. I'm into Virtual Reality projects (from outside) but starting to get involved in them on my own with my own projects.
