moyaku wrote:Actually I think I do understand critical thinking, I never said underlining negative aspects was a bad thing either. Although I do believe being negative right away after 4 days is a little early, you sound like everything is gonna be the same again when we (as you said yourself) don't even know who is the new owner and what are their aims for the game's future.

I don't see the problem in questioning, suggesting and asking for some information early on. Or at least getting the community discussing in what one would hope is an objective manner. I mean this is business, its been dead two times already following one and I shudder to call it this business model. All I'm asking for is a statement "yes we are going to try things differently this time" or more community suggestions on how to keep the game alive this time. I think the time for go on I'l give the game one more blind chance is pretty much long dead.

As for the "ghost server" aspect, I m afraid it's a feeling I never yet experienced.
If "content" also means event well it's only up to the community to create some, it has been done many times before and was most of the time a success.
I used to be online all day for years and when you do a /who and see only like 10 people in yrk at peak time, then find bugger all more people when you tp around thats what I call a ghost server. Half the guilds died, the others lost 70%+ of their members etc...

Community events help but they where few and far between but nice, by content I mean something to break the grind up something new, something fun well I just mean content but basicly good content one would hope. Ryzom has so much potential to see it go months and months without updates or anything of value was depressing to me, and look at now how long has it taken for someone to be able to take control and restart ryzom again...

I think it's obvious that players such as you and me will never ever get the feelings we had first time we entered PR or crossed HH simply because we already know every square centimeters of it (and starting from level 1 won't change that if you are a sneaker ;) ), but still this never deprived me to enjoy the memories of it when wandering around.
Then making friends is still pretty easy people are open minded enough to give you a chance.
As for the childish Kami/Kara fight, well I just decided not to take part in it and just play with my friends regardless of their IG religion (yes yes this is possible)
You want the ring tweaked ? then I think Faa opened a thread about changes...
Maybe not the same sneak feeling, as for making friends I can be good at it trust me. I simply meant the community was small and stale nearly everyone knew everyone etc no new blood, no feeling of vastness out there.

As for kami/kara I was a very old school dragonblade it didn't get more neutral than that.... What I meant by childish fight was the incessant forum ***** by children with hyped up e-peens and insecure adults who should of known better constantly accusing each other of what they where all guilty of

As for the ring good to see it being dsicussed, I hope it will happen when it first came out it was just pants especially after all that hype
Mostly money talk... still if they do not spend it here they ll spend it somewhere else ; maybe they ll get only a few months of pleasure but the quality of it will be the same as what we experienced when you and I started playing, mostly if the community keeps the positive spirit up (only my opinion here)
Well it makes the world go around, it pays for servers, staff, udpates, content. My point is I would dearly like to see it spent here and good intentions, blind hope and crossing our fingers just won't cut it. We should take a stand, let feelings be known, discuss the best ways to make it so, start up, fan websites, groups, pro active community plans to raise awareness of ryzom. Things like that. That and these forums to be archived read only and new ones opened so no one has the post count chip on their shoulder. New players always hate that.

wait and see ;) in the meanwhile come and have firewine at thesos bar so we can finish this conversation :P
I'd love to but I'm visiting family who only have a pc that runs at 70% cpu usage when running firefox so I doubt I could get ryzom running :P Besides I'm not one of the VIP a few months before ryzom died the second time or was it the first ( Maybe both) I declared the game would soon be dead and stopped playing. Sadly I was right :P but regardless I can't login besides who would want to talk to a totally naked homin, and his sentient god hat who runs constantly in circles for hours.

I kind of agree with johntf on this.

I logged on the other day, said a few hellos, went for a ride around then logged off to play Age of Conan. Maybe it's because there might a wipe, maybe it's because I don't know as many people now, or maybe it's because I've become accustomed to questing but I just couldn't bring myself to continue grinding.

WAR is being released soon and that IS a game I'm interested in playing, despite not following it that closely. I know I will do a million quests, hit max level, farm loot, do a lot of pvp - all the same stuff I do in all MMOs but it's a new world I want to experience. Ryzom needs something new for players like me, even if Spiderweb just announce they have something planned.

Hopefully I'll just get back into the swing of things and create my own fun as everyone who is still around pretty much does :) It is nice to be able to play again and to have some communication from the new owners.

By endgame I mean killing bosses, killing npc bosses, fighting for outposts and the politics it involves.
Yeah done all that...still my point is should the wants of a small few of a playerbase that already wasn't profitable be catered to when you want your game to be a sucess ?

I remember this one, did'nt SoE have the same policy with SWG, roaring success I bow to your wisdom!, screw the players we're going mainsteam :)
Well for one swg was already mainstream, two it was a bad decision they made their but they made an already profitable and highly so game unprofitable through one bad decision. I'm talking about making changes to a buiness model in ryzom thats been proven to be a repeated and disasterious faliure. I think my wisdom is pretty obvious here. If you run a game the same way its died twice already will the game die again ? Yes it will. I don't care about words like mainstread and niche and all that crap either, Ryzom is an amazing game and frankly it should always of been mainstream as in having a large playerbase. Sadly it was overlooked and badly managed.

maybe there were reasons beyond fresh servers that ryzom failed. 1st time was because patch 1 where they screwed over all the players who'd followed it throug beta and beyond, then there was bug and bug and bugs. so development debts didnt get covered and it went bump. secondly we had the wonderful gameforge who ploughed loads of cash into ryzom.........oh whats that lassie.....they didnt.........they left it to rot with no advertising.......oh nvm.
I never said the fresh servers caused ryzom to fail, I said they were't the point or even a relation to the idea of completely fresh servers, they are totally different things. As for why it failed well you covered some very basic points but there's no need to go all over this gain right now. Basicly it's been run by people who don't know how to run a business each time and its failed for that simple reason.
arfindel wrote:Like Moya said, it's too early to ask after 4 days of VIP access what content, what deveopment aso, not only early but rises a second question: are we, as a highly polarized, worn out community of players a good asset for Ryzom? Heh.
The games died twice already, so I'd say its never too early to start asking questions, and I'd hope whoever bought this game now asked and answered them before they even put an offer down to take over the game. I really do or the game will fail. This is business you don't take it over then plan what to do, you plan what to do then take it over. So yes they should already have answers

Anyway at release Ryzom needs a marketing campain. During the campain there will be advertising. Advertising will answer precisely your questions. As intent. As implementation? About a year after release the game itself will answer.
Yeah I already mentioned marketing, advertising never answers anything its an advert not an honest discussion. Adverts are meant to lie it their job. Well this isn't release its a reopening third time. Wait and see for a year is not a business plan or model and well frankly if things aren't addressed there won't be a game in a year. I mean did gameforge get a year ?

Up to now: they promissed opening servers, servers are up. They promissed VIP access, VIP access is here. They promissed a new engine for the website, new website is here. Personally I prefer few promisses fulfilled rather than a ton of promisses (see 2003 release and see Ring release) 20% fulfilled.

Oh and about the subject question: the VIP access is for those who wanted to play any kind of Ryzom, similar to beta players. When the company - whatever it may be this - will want money for your playing, they will provide answers, they have no other choice. Right now, it's just a gift for the die hard fans, nothing more.
So they promised they'd reopen the servers one day and made good on it, sorry but given the time involved and exactly "who" promised and who has is up for debate right now. I know VIP is a gift and its a good thing, but since this is the first thing to make it look like ryzom will live once more and that the VIP thing is over in like a week I'd like to seriously question what their plans will be for when this undetermined repeat open server bit is through.

I believe it's a lot based on personal experience here, and personal experience... guess what? it's mostly personal *grin*
I logged in every day since the VIP access and each time I barely had time to find my stuff because of chats and had to turn down some invites to hunt as well.

One clarification that needs being done is there are two points of view in extreme opposition:
A. The game never went backrupt, the companies did.
B. The game went banckrupt twice.

Now in my opinion the B assertion is not operable at all. If it's true the game failed twice why bother. But I guess all those who are active here wether they express it or not, base their reasoning on A.

About advertising as lieing. Well, advertising might be generalised as lieing, but if you're on the other side of the wall, the producer not the customer, you'll soon see that advertising as lieing might increase your expenses to banckrupcy :) In MMOs advertising = list of promissed features. Customers have a range of tolerance against this list. Once this tolerance is over, you lose player base. Lieing becomes expensive. If you look to the other games on the market there are some things people most never lie about because they know too well they are out of the tolerance range. Cannot advertise crafting without a craft system, cannot advertise free pvp if it's consensual etc.

But let's get straight here. You say you're doing criticism not negativism. And ask for new content and development. I say once it's almost ready advertising will answer this question. You answer: advertising is lieing. Then what? Waiting for a company oath of faith to the players, a solemn pledge, a legal refund binding? Cmon.

Finally about if this player base, or rather this type of player base can be profitable for Ryzom or not, there are some 2 threads where we debated precisely this during the last month.

I see your point but what I mean is advertising doesn't always tell the full story, all I'd like to see is a post saying "Yes we will handle things differently" right now.

Well as for a debate on profitability, not all its previous playerbase will return, if it returns as it did new players will emerge slightly slower then previously I suspect and the games history strongly indicates that isn't profitable. So I would feel completely confident if run as it was the game would not be profitable enough to survive.

Think best way to find out about future of the game is....to keep an eye on official forums/webby.

And patience is a virtue :)

All of us...i presume...are thrilled about Ryzom beeing live again in the first place, second place is sit back.. show some patience..hope for the best...
and lets face it ..if the new owner wasn`t or isn`t gonna do anything about lets say new content and stuff...why going through the effort of re-opening a alrdy twice dead game.

I think it would be unwise to pin yourself down before you had a product to sell. I would want to advertise the product I was charging for, not the one I was developing.

Someone did it once, I wouldn't put it beyond the realms of human stupidity to do it twice.

agree 100% in that m8,but lets be honest ..dont you think that the current/new owner is aware of that?

And face the fact that GF is merely a company that thought to smell a fast buck here, not even thinking of the consequenses of what a real MMO brings with it to run and keep it running to the satisfaction of it`s players.

I only know GF from Free to Play games....heck they spamm my mailbox on a weekly base to try a free game of em,GF made their biggest mistake ever in trying to gain fast cash out of Ryzom.

On the other hand.. Nevrax..believe me friend they absolutely knew what they were doing with bringing SoR onto the internet, the unfortunate part however for Nevrax was the cashflow.
They knew they had struck gold with SoR ...but for some reason they failed to hit the mainvein.

All i can hope for now is that our current/new owner has dug deep enough and struck that mainvein and continue or at least pick up where Nevrax left.
