Heard about it mostly because Acridiel pointed me to Ryzom Radio. Then I discovered Beau's podcast and became a regular listener. The podcast did a much better job at advertising than Gameforge ever did with the posts on their browsergame forums.
It's GF's "advertisement" that made me play, it's the podcast.
I played for 4 months on the trial before I could afford the sub : I was hooked already.

I picked up a mag with a CD attached, dunno..sometime in 2003 or 4 , there was a fascinating picture of Homins battling Kitins on the CD which caught my eye.
Ryzom was my first experience of a MMORPG, prior to Ryzom I'd been playing MUD's for donkey's years. Wooow, believe me Ryzom pre-beta really blew me away...so many things that had been in my head while playing mud's where suddenly in front of me, right there on the screen! Its been a long tortuous road from then to now, but I am still in awe.

A friend, Xyrana, had told me about the game about 2 years ago. I tried it and loved it. I have played PC and console RPG's for many years, as well as the old pencil/paper D&D decades ago. The play, graphics and concept blew me away.. still does.. Can't wait to play again, it's the best MMO I've found yet, and I have tried almost 2 dozen since the Big Lag and the closing of the servers months ago.
I was always on the lookout for a new game and it still surprises me I had never seen it advertized in any of the gaming mags I used to subscribe to.
I await the opening of the servers with the calm of a junkie needing a fix.

I saw a game first at a game portal
http://www.mmorpgdot.com back in 2003
and kept following it's progress ever since...
I think the best way to market a game such as this is concentrate on the right audience and then let the heresay do the rest...
Interesting and In-depth articles about best things in Ryzom at gaming sites can do the trick + certain mmo forums aswell.
Not just spamming, mind you - but in'depth precise posts...
Ryzom has quite a Unique selling point

I've seen an ad for Ryzom in a pc games magazine. I think it was Summer '04. I've studied Ryzom's website but didn't sign up to the beta because I didn't want to start an MMO yet. "Too time consuming" I thought. But I bookmared the site.
Then WoW started and all the magazines published articles about it. WoW here, WoW there. It was disgusting. (And it didn't change since then...) I remembered Ryzom and how innovative it was compared to WoW.
In February 05 I was so fed up with all that WoW stuff I had to read that I created a Ryzom account out of protest. I wanted to support this fine, small game. The protest against WoW became deep love to Ryzom after the first days of playing.

Was bored with what I was playing, had one sister trying to get me onto EQ2 the other rooting for WoW. Downloaded Ryzom so I could see if I could play a game like this (I am on dial up), got hooked within hours...

My friend randomly found it during our free online game fad. This is the first one we actually liked enough to start paying.
