Well, Nevrax Idea was to bring something new and exiting to the market.
They intended for other Companies to follow their example and give more "power to the players". They just didn´t count on almost noone being interested in this great idea in a game that essentially was almost dead by the time they had developed it.
It was a last ditch attempt at fame and a try with the padles on Ryzoms unconcious body. The fame they will get, as inventors of a great new way of gaming, if people will remember them at all, but the planed revitalisation of Ryzom didn´t work, sadly.

The article shows that at least its writer remembers Nevrax, I doubt though that many CoH/V Players and others for that matter ever will.
For them now CoH/V will always be "the first who had it".
And if they accept it, the way we didn´t, they will probably have the numbers to give it more of an impact on the general scene, then the idea will stay.
And somewhere in the dark recess of the Internet, the corner none of the "hip-crowd" will ever look a small band of Ryzomites (or Ryzombies if you like) will always know and whisper under their breath:
WE WHERE THERE WHEN IT WAS FIRST CONCIEVED!
WE WERE THOSE WHO BETA TESTED ITS FIRST INCARNATION!
WE WERE ITS FIRST PLAYERS!
It WAS ... OUR PRECIOUS!!!
And sadly were the first to squander its wealth loose it too.

it was a crap idea when ryzom did it
seems ppl dont learn
ring killed ryzom, so much more decent stuff could have been done in the same time.

This can't be connected simply because there was not enough time to adapt the ryzomean ring engine to CoH CoV ways and standards... The game has only recently been bought, so this is most likely just a coincidence a "their own idea" inspired by R2 no doubt...

It was a crap idea, yes, because Nevrax overestimated the ability of players to give a crap about creating their own content. Not to mention the bugs and functional flaws.
But Ring didn't kill Ryzom. There were other factors that were much more prominent, i.e. lack of marketing.

Reading this reminded me about the faith of Commodore when they released the Amiga computer. They too had a serious lack of marketing. As a result, they went bankrupted. They re-surfaced a couple of years later when a Germany company bought them. Then, no words again until I saw last year an add for customized computer case and there it was again.

The Ring wasn't necessarily a bad idea but the amount of time and resources it swallowed up for a half-arsed/unfinished project definitely could of been better spent and contributed heavily to Ryzom's downfall, which is what I think old Jacko boy was getting at.

Well, they have announced it but without a timeframe. Actually the next CoX issue (12th) will be released, probably at end of may, so the 13th can be released just after summer.
Plenty of time to adapt the engine.
And they have announced it enough early because they know the CoX players and always have announced things very early (and i admit, they always have done what promised, except some good nerf that any mmo can't live without).
I hope this is just an inference of mine.
Anyway, thx kom, to stay in the subject. I hope you are right.
About the rest of the discussion, we already have filled the forum with that. Anyway, I agree with jacko that Nevrax should have focused on different things and not the Ring. You need the cake first to use in the right way the cherry.

Simutronics, creators of DragonRealms and Gemstone, developmental model is/has been based on a ring like concept. Development is subcontracted out using their engine to produce expansions to the main game. It is my understanding that they are now in the process of creating Heroes Journey using a large number of volunteer world designers. The opportunity to get free and/or greatly cost reduced development has to be intriguing to every MMO owner.
I am not a programer but I would think it would be much harder to adapt the ryzom ring to another game then it would be to create an entirely new program. I think it much more likely that we would see a whole new world born from the Ryzom purchase instead of someone attempting to merge it into an existing engine. However, after seeing the brainiac 'businessmen' who have run Ryzom so far, I would not be surprised if some game company thought they could make money by adapting the Ryzom engine for the ultimate game of lemonade stand.

Sorry to derail thread, Gilga...
But i thought Hero's journey stalled and they haven't managed to find enough devs? at least it looks that way from their websites...

And the fact that Ryzom ran dead slow on many PCs that were still around at the time it was released.
