Re: The RP³ Project
I wonder what publishing Ryzom the paper RPG (aka. Merchandise) has to do with killing Ryzom the MMORPG. Before talking about retardation, maybe you could explain that?xtarsia wrote:In short: NO

IMHO if anything is killing Ryzom, it's the various marketing failures we had so far. Doesn't everything that generates interest in (and possibly even revenue for) Ryzom actually help saving your beloved game (which is to me as well, just to clarify that )?
The only MMORPG in which you bash each other with wooden swords exclusively.

Re: The RP³ Project
Perhaps consider the awfulness that any attempt to turn ryzom into a Pen and paper boredom fest would be?
It would be so far detached from the original idea, simply because of the innate limitations of that medium.
Perhaps a table top war game, aka the Games workshop stuff would be more suited.
PnP games need to go rot in some corner and die a slow agonizing death like they deserve
Heck you'd be better off making it into a....
WEB GAME ala Gameforge xD xD
Oh dear..
As for petty insults, Welcome to my level its nice here aint it?

Re: The RP³ Project
Iirc, either Nevrax or DCC himself has been aproached in the past about such a proposition. I can also recall a proposition for a comic; the samples looked amazing, belgo-french comic art style much in line with the concept art and sketches during the development phase of the game. Neither of those ideas got green light back then.
A person you might want to contact on the PnP proposition is James 'Grim' Desborough, also known as Grimjim or Jyudas around here. He's been writing for various PnP games for years (mostly as freelancer iirc), even brought forth some games of his own, and his knowledge of Atys and it's lore is unrefuteable and better than most. I'm pretty sure a Ryzom PnP project will interest him. You should be able to contact him through Postmortem Studios.
Personally I won't vote. I admire the idea but can see the hardship in trying to convert the obscure lore of Ryzom into a full-fledged RP setting for a PnP game. The original story, only known to the developpers and event-managers, was developped to expand over time in a setting shrouded by mystery, myths, propaganda and would eventually result in the real 'truth' being figured out.
Now, when writing a scenario, book, story, plot, ... you will almost always (I'm saying almost because there's a few exceptions to the rule) need to know where all your writing is leading to, a culmination of events, a climax, an 'ending'. Converting and penning down the full extent of the lore would immediatly result in eliminating the mystery and destroying that what actually 'made' the setting imo and thus futilise the 'goal' of the game: uncovering the truth.
I am taking a guess here, but most likely, with everything been written, re-written and waiting on the shelf to still be written-out of the lore, it's very likely that what we players (even those who have been here since beta) know or think to know of the lore at this stage of the story is probably less than 10% of the overal plot. Some don't understand and see the lore we have now as the full lore, others know what's been given ingame and through events, then some know how to read between the lines and know a bit more, some got spoiled by angry people spreading spoilers and lastly you have the event team that probably knows most due to their involvement with events and were possibly given more background info to build their events on, so they might know prior motivations and possible outcomes. But it would still be little compared to the original development team and the writer who's name I forgot.
Anyways, I can't see a PnP project working with a setting based on only the 10% of the lore known right now, without notion of the climax or conditions to an 'ending' of the story. Yet if more would be given away it is very likely the magic of the setting would dissapear to many.
Just my two dappers.
And on a sidenote: please for the love of Atys, don't base the gamemechanics on D20. It's a horribly abstract and highly illogical game system that only suits class or template gameplay. I'd rather see a fresh breeze and have it have it's very own gamemechanics, preferably skillpool/skillpoint based. Something that blends in with the atmosphere of the game.

Without PnP there wouldn't have been any real MMORPGs. True, there's a lot of crap on the market, but one can easily blame money-grubbing TSR for that.
(I'm so gonna get a DnD-fanboi lynching mob tailing me )
As for it being a limited medium; I actually see CRPGs and MMORPGs as the limited ones; limitations impossed on us by developers and programmers. In PnP games the only limitations are set by my imagination and the Gamesmaster. Now if you are talking about marketing and market apeal ... sure thing, won't disagree there. But only because of the stygmata society imposed on it.

And the people it was PMed to via this forum. But even that is quite incomplete and does not reveal the "ending."calel wrote:The original story, only know to the developpers and event-managers

Re: The RP³ Project
I'm betting it was only a small part being passed on. I can't see anyone not needing to have access to the full story getting their hands on it, let alone someone who really does, distributing it.

Re: The RP³ Project
Well, lets just say Calel you´re raising some valid points here
But don´t think I we did not think of these too
We may have an Ace up our sleve and I´m glad you brought GrimJim into the picture
I was hopeing he´d somehow get wind of the whole thing
He allready contacted me.
And of course, we´re depending entirely on the goodwill and maybe even a bit on the "adventurousness" of any proposed new owner, barring Xaviers bunch
This was intended as a "let you know" and a way to find out a bit about peoples reaction to the idea. As I see for now the whle spectrum can be seen, as I expected.
We will try our best, and if any new owner does not want an P&P merchandise, well then it probaly can´t be helped anyway.
