Second Life has an extensive avatar customisation system. You can make your avatar look however you want it to look.
Take a look at the Myst Online: URU Live place. It's a partial recreation of part of said MMORPG. Might provide some inspiration.

Okay, I met up with Beau yesterday in Second Life. Odd world, that is. Potential, but I can't imagine a truly playable Ryzom-like environment there. It's more for viewing and simpler, non-time-sensitive interactions.
Anyways, seems like a good place to while away some time and chat.
BTW, Beau thanks a bunch for the podcasts. I'm enjoying just listening to them over again. Especially with your pronunciation of words I've said differently in my mind for so long... (Kihteenz vs. Kihtihnz?) =)

Myst Online is for sure awesome, but for my taste there is too much time in between new 'ages' and new things.
I am a Myst fan but after zillions of times doing the same things i cannot get there. Anyway, it's so different from usual MMO that can be refreshing.
Also the graphic and the 'feeling' is great. But, how many of you can stay without any 'combat'?
Anyway if anyone wanna create 'ryzom' neighborhood there let me know and i will be back there.

entropia has a SL like economy, crafting, mining combined with an mmofps combat system and magic users typical combat system.

If Second Life had better controls for moving around, I think it would be a lot more fun. I wish you could move around in it a little more like in Ryzom, where you hold both mouse buttons down to move and steer by moving left and right.
