Too much emphasis on them in the game.
Anything that makes you "beat" the game in weeks is wrong. MMOs should have a lifespan measured in years, not weeks.

From a long term business perspective they are a horrible idea. Looking forward to the future to of Ryzom it would be prudent to remove them in an effort to lengthen the average subscription duration. While this may cause some accts to be lost in the short term, it is a step towards a better more populated future for Atys.

Second day after I came back to Ryzom I asked a player who was kind of newish, not long off the starter island if he wanted to party for a bit of hunting as I wanted to work on some of my lower skills. His answer...
"Sorry I can't, I want to save my cats for crafting."
I never even said anything abouts cats, can't people level now without them. Do all the new players now hang about outside the city stables twiddling fingers waiting till the guild leaders come on so they can get their daily fix.
Remove cats.

Unfortunately, the greatest reward from outposts (with a few exceptions if one values certain OP materials greater) are the catalyzers. Removing them would remove the greatest incentive for attacking/holding the active outposts and essentially undermine whatever importance they have.
I'd much rather see actual development -- rebuilding the civilizations, if you will -- linked to outposts rather than production of experience crystals. Implementing those little devils, instead of opening the door for long-term goals, seemed like the easy way out for Nevrax.

issue is, ryzom isnt exactly growing as it is. so right now we have in place a system that makes it where people can play the game for as short as time possible. that has the side effect of causing issues (ive read the forums before i got here. cats were alright flamed and fought over) .
on the other hand we have the motivation for outpost battles. well i know plenty of people who dont like them. reason they go to them? cats for them and their allies.
so basically people at op battles become those who are truly interested in pvp and this is a bad thing?

I think there is plenty of room for improvement for the game. I just do not agree that removing cats fixes any of the long term problems. I think the first step is ID the problem before you can fix it. I'd say the problem is players desubbing. I do not see how removing cats will stop that.
I think the vast majority of players who drop their subs never reach 250. I suspect it is prolly much closer to the 160 - 180 range. Basically, when they can't level on plants anymore.
Most groups have multi 250's grinding out lower skills and those skills are used in a clutch, removing all risk to the new player. Many new players just absorb xp, and are run through the most effective regime to reach 250. People are not desubbing because another player is getting easier xp. They are desubing because they are bored.
The answer for the cat problem is not to remove them, the answer is to make them irrelevant, obsolete, to make them have less value. This can be achieved by raising the level cap and/or creating a mechanic where everyone has access to them.
Future development should be based on the way the game is now and a vision of the future. It should not be based on what the 100 people who use these forums want. I would prefer that GF keep the vision of the game and not bend to the topic of the day.
The major problem as I see it, is that Atys has become a comfortable place. It is predictable. It is mapped. It is safe. It is becoming boring. Removing cats address none of those issues.

at the very least, takes them twice as long to get to the point they want to un-sub. which translates to a higher player base.

so far the vision has been updated stamina and being able to stack sap crystals. if the vision is 'dont make new content for ryzom' we are right on course.
as for the "topic of the day" part, ive look at the forums for the last year (all 39 pages) as i tend to learn the history of where im at. it seems cats have come up more than once before.

Just reduce their output by 70%.
Make them rarer, people will still use them, just less often. that way new players wont see as many of them and will understand that they are supposed to be something to be treasuered. not the norm.
