I've been using FRAPS. It's available for free, and superimposes the FPS on a corner of the screen. It can also log the data to a file, but unless you have Excel or something to process it, it's probably not worth doing that way.

my suggestion is to close all other applications running, including spyware and help drivers... also check what services are running and shut off all that you dont need.

also, dont use winxp, i suggest using win2k as it much less memory and cpu intensive. or atleast turn off the extra grafix in the os...

i got a 2.2 (oc. 2.6)ghz amd Athlon
epox 200mhz fsb (400mhz)
2*256 Dual DDR400mhz (3200)
Nvidia Gforce 4-mx

havent had any problems at all with fps or anything.
but it sometimes feels laggy when there are alot of fog, so i turned it down to lowest quality...

Thanks for the suggestions wayas. I'm a computer control freak so I turn off all unnecessary services including antivirus stuff if I'm just playing and I use the task manager to stop unnecessary processes also. I'm still using w2k, since i don't like wxp's useless and resource-hungry eye candy. I also tried using the absolute lowest graphics settings, but they don't seem to make much difference except for the clouds (and fog on the same control panel?) and microvegetation.

Our systems seem fairly similar except for the FSB and I didn't OC my Athlon. That's even the same graphics card I was using before I upgraded to the Radeon 9700 Pro. I'm debating whether I should return the Radeon if they'll accept it without a restocking fee, etc.

Almost I wish I didn't even start benchmarking the performance since I would just be enjoying Ryzom without keeping an eye on the FPS. But I did want some kind of justification for blowing $150 on a graphics card.
