Well, I'm happy to see that some people have still got the spirit of what Atys is meant to be. I was in no rush to master my healing because I kew that once I hit the final DING!... there would be no more space for me as a healer in any hunt parties. And I absolutely loved healing those teams. Now the occasions in which I can heal are really rare, as I am most often in demand for my elemental master skills than healer ones.
The one who told you that you're not useful if you're not a master was either wrong or lying. I found out that your skills are most wanted on teams while they are not yet mastered.
The only "grind" for me is to level a skill solo. It's when gaining levels gets lonely and boring. Hunting in a team is never a grind for me. I never grind, thus it takes me more than a year to master any skill.

I think I will be forever chasing the DING. I've been playing since 2007 and have yet to master anything...lol.
Ryzom is definitely not about getting to some proverbial end-game. It's about that journey, more so than other games. When I've taken breaks from Atys and ventured into other worlds, I find myself missing the calm I get from listening to music and just digging for a few hours. It really does take a different mind-set to enjoy this world.

All i can say is Different strokes for different folks
In the end its all about having FUN, not about what other people think.
As long as you enjoy playing the game

i can agree. ryzom is different. ryzom is really good. and i like the soul of ryzom. i like digging, i like crafting. and i would like to get my heal skill maxed. now i stucked at 192 heal and doing only digging and crafting. because its more fun and more action than leveling my heal skill. im pretty bored of fighting foreseeable mobs. imo it would be cool to have another possibilities to get some skill level than just mindless grind
maybe during encyclopedia missions or the kitin nest. we will see

*shakes head* Kreios, Kreios, Kreios...
I think you haven´t really understood the initial post.
It´s not about "getting a skill level" at all ...
If you still think like that, than you´ll never be truly happy on Atys.

I think Ryzom is special. I have been around like forever and my highest skill is 187.
I love to explore and evidently dying as I do that so well.
It is thrilling to finally level but not necessary. There is just so much that can be done. I am not one for leveling or for titles.
I have drifted off to other games, of course, took a long drift when GameForge took over. But Ryzom is always in my heart. So I never truly leave. My spirit always remains here. There is just something special and unique about Ryzom.
Gamers are kind of fickle. They hit a new game running, check it out, do the different things and then get bored and move on to the next one. Many never return to it. The diehard Ryzom players never really leave or they return.
We have a unique game and a great community, what more could you ask for.
(waits for Jayce to tell me)

Yeah, had a good laugh today, when I discovered that the first Aion-Grinders are already starting to whine "The Devs are doing nothing, where´s the next expansion!", after not even two month of play. *ROFL*
It´s like a car accident, too horrible to look away from XD

I think the problem for these people is, that they are only able to measure success by numbers.
They don´t see an abstract way of "playing", levels are a way measure what they've accomplished in a certain amount of time. The less time, the better.
And when they´ve reached the end of that line they´re stuck without the feeling of accomplishment and success.
Of course its an extremely limited way of looking at a game. And by looking at a game this way, they´re limiting themselves. And in the course of things, the gameplay of others, by forcing their "boredom" on them.
If these folks could somehow be convinced of these facts and that "numbers aren´t everything", they might even find new enjoyment in the games they´re playing.
But alas, many of these folks either don´t want to learn or don´t care about what others think.
Of course they do have a right to their own "style of play" and nobody would argue against it here I think, but hopefully they might some day be convinced that by just going through the motions time and again in any game they play, they´re actually harming the industry.
By putting unneeded pressure on the Devs, who are then forced to do half assed jobs in the time frame they´re given and churn out more and more of the usual grind routine games, just to keep the money flowing. Which in turn causes the players to complain about said jobs and the repetitive nature of MMOs in general.
Its a very sad fact, and a conundrum that is not easily solved.
