I'm not accusing hardcore gamers as a whole. I'm just pointing out the few who do share those certain qualities. I'm a hardcore gamer, also. At least when it comes to MMO's.
I do think that different types of gamers have a LOT to do with the different opinions on games. I know I, for one, take my gaming too seriously sometimes and I realize I can be over critical on some aspects of games.
When it comes to console games, I'm a casual player. I sit back and take the game for what it is. Why? I suppose it's because any opinion I have on it will have no affect on it since it's already published and shipped. Wheereas with MMO's developers tend to listen to player's ideas, suggestions, and complaints and make changes to the persistant game through patches.
What magically perfect game...?
Re: What magically perfect game...?
FFXI was great for me, the game system, the crafting were all great. The only thing that ruined it for me was the japanese players and their already established economy. Having them on the server with a year or two ahead of the rest of us caused alot of economic issues with the game. They have also found all the rare spawns and camp them like crazy. I for one hate unique spawns that people end up camping. I am starting to see that happening in this game and I hope they make several versions of the same mob spawn randomly all over the land instead of just in one predictable place.
Re: What magically perfect game...?
I didn't like the linear, cookie cutter gameplay. Everyone ahd the same skills, same armor, same hairstyle, etc. I also didn't like how after I hit 60, I had nothing to look forward to. I quit shortly after =(
Re: What magically perfect game...?
I quit after lvl 70. I had to kill maat to progress past 70 and it was neigh impossible to get the testimate required to attempt maat without a group to help you get it. Try asking japanese players to help you when they don't understand your language. It is very difficult. All the NA players were interested in were leveling so they only helped me a few times. My guild was too low level to help at the time so I was stuck at 70 and had no desire to play anymore. So I quit.stellus wrote:I didn't like the linear, cookie cutter gameplay. Re: What magically perfect game...?
Yeah, I got my Monk Testiment out of luck.
I believe they had -way- too many servers. What they needed to do was cut the number of servers in half and then separate the players into NA and JP specific servers. It was too hard to find a party because there weren't enough NA players on at the same time, especially at higher levels.

LOL, AO before, during, and after Shadowlands has remained one of the most buggy MMOs to me. Have they ever fixed any of the 90% of junk items in that game? ever fix pet pathing and AI for the pet professions?darq787 wrote:Sorry to pull this off topic here, but I hate when people rag on AO. The game did have a bad launch, but most of the problems were quickly fixed and the game was very clean of bugs pre-shadowlands.
AO has been successful, I know because our guild is founded by people from it. But bug free it has always been a long, long ways from.

Re: What magically perfect game...?
AO is so much better than it was when I first played it in beta and 6 months after release. I can say they have done a great job fixing the game to the point where its quite popular with alot of people. I myself still have 2 accounts in AO and played it often til Ryzom came out. I need to cancel my accounts in UO, COH and FFXI.
Re: What magically perfect game...?
1. Ryzom, like all new games, has its growing pains.
2. Currently Ryzom lacks many of the player friendly features found in other games. Most of these features are small things that can be included in the game. These features have been listed elsewhere in this forum.
3. Ryzom staff (guides, etc) responsiveness is excellent. Good show to all of you for your efforts!
4. The Ryzom concept . . . potentially Ryzom can be a great game. Thus far it is both interesting and fun. If you get tired of doing something, you can do something else for a while -- without changing characters.
5. The Ryzom community . . . so far all races (local and region chats) are friendly and helpful, adding to the game enjoyment.
My main worry is that, like many other games, potential remains just potential. I hope Ryzom uses nerf bats judiciously and keeps the fun factor in the forefront. Silly me but, when I see the concepts in this game, I have high hopes for the future of the Saga of Ryzom.

Re: What magically perfect game...?
I like what someone said above about people expecting the next game to have all the good points of the games they haved played in the past but none of the bad.
What most players don't realize (or maybe they just don't care to think about) is that these companies are just that "companies" someone has to pay the bills. Just because they can look at AO, or EQ, or DAoC or UO and say we want to incorporate this and that from all these other games, does not mean time constraints (dictated by the money people) will allow them to put it all in the orginal box, even if they really wanted to. Devs don't make the schedules (unfortunately for us), the guys with the purse strings do.
One of the other problems I have seen, SEEMS to be the fact that the mean age of the average player has dropped considerably in the past 3-5 years. We now have people who are not quite old enough yet to understand that "opinion" is not the same thing as fact. You get these people stating their opinion of the game as if it were law, hense the nay sayers and such. These also seem to be the people who (not having a income of their own) tend to bounce from beta to beta and only ever see the bugs. They almost never see the fixed and continually updated product, so their view is very skewed to begin with.
Just a couple of theories about the attitudes of the players of these games now.
I like this one alot, looks like it will be good for a couple of years of play if not more.

Junk items are not bugs. Pet pathing was working very well up until SL released then it broke for some reason, but has been mostly fixed again. Sorry, I have had an active acount in AO since release, the game has gotten tons better and continues to do so, major bugs have not been an "issue" with the game for a long time, SL had some problems but they were fixed. I haven't played in a month so can't say if AI broke anything new. /offtopicsvayvti wrote:LOL, AO before, during, and after Shadowlands has remained one of the most buggy MMOs to me. Average age of gamers has actually gone way up. In this game I was talking with a bunch (15ish) of people on region one night and most of them were over 30 with only 3 people in their 20s, I was amazed. Two of them were actually grandparents. Most of the kiddy gamers seem to stick with the "free" online games like Diablo2 and Sacred. Only place you can see a lot of them is on the WoW forums where they moan about how unfair monthly fees are.
