Amph, no flame intended here, I promise! :)

But why speculate things like this? Why don't we speculate the GOOD things. I can dream up a million POSSIBLE scenarios, some good, some bad.
The thing is, this game has a uniqueness that not many other games have. And I know from experience, I have played well over 40 now, and have maintained accounts on around 20 sumthin of them. NONE of them have what Ryzom has: this incredible community.
I find myself wondering if the game makers planned a community, somehow, through some writing of code, or by participating in game events, or something. I don't know, my gut feeling tells me it was sheer luck and the determination and guts of a community like this one. The kind of community that can police itself, that can make such incredible player-ran events, that writes stories, makes art...
Again, no flame intended, but in the last weeks I have grown a lil weary of posts that speculate always about the negatives.
It reminds me of my friend, that recently started dating a new girl. He was so sure that she would turn out bad that he finally just cut it off, without ever letting the relationship grow. I told him that "so if she DID turn out bad, it can always be ended. You let it end before it could've turned out GOOD."
The game is still very awesome, the community even better, so I prefer to just log in and enjoy it as it is.

Actually I think the potential playerbase on OSX is significant. Mac users have a pretty small selection of games available to them without resorting to Windows in one way or another, and I think the whole style of Ryzom may have special appeal to many Mac users in general; they have a predisposition for design and elan which they have already shown by buying a Mac :D . I couldn't guess at how much work it would be to port to run on Macs but there is an advantage there in that Mac hardware specifications are limited and known. And linux and OSX have fundamental similarities so porting to one system should make the other very much more easy to complete, in theory. I believe that Nevrax did carry out some development, early on, towards producing a linux version of Ryzom, but that's just a rumour :p .

I think the initial post in the thread was good in the aspect of making me happy for what we've got and, maybe also for what we (hopefully) won't get. Thanks.

Hominkind is a beautiful thing.

I think that OSX or Linux markets are a bit pointless... Little playerbase in that kind of systems.
That is a self-fulfilling cycle: game developers don't make the effort to code clients for Mac or Linux because there aren't as many gamers on those platforms, because there aren't as many games on those platforms, because game developers don't make the effort...and so on.

Aside from that, I think Linux users might find the freedom in Ryzom's systems appealing. Ryzom already works in Wine, but software developers porting their asset is an appreciable gesture. Which reminds me...I hope changes involved in the client-slimming don't render it incompatible with Wine-on-Linux. :(

Anyway, on the topic of NGE, I'm a bit worried by this:
[22:17] Souls_666> "you've made some references to more content - define 'more content'
[22:19] Phelan> quests and bosses. and whatever else is a good idea and doable.
"quests and bosses." - Chilling.

The chance that they'll do the quests correctly (ergo: realistic, believable, challenging, and roleplay-supportive) is very small.

Also, once you have chosen to define content as such, you are essentially implementing an entire mentality: that of completable content leading the player from beginning to end, at which point the insatiable drive to acheive becomes irrevocably dominant, and esoteric concepts like community and roleplay are lost.

"and whatever else is a good idea and doable." - On one hand, it's nice to think that good suggestions might have a chance of being implemented. On the other hand, what is GF going to think of as "good"? What type of player is going to be listened to by GF? The noobs who want things to be easy and instantly-gratifying (who sadly represent the majority of humanity, thus the allure of profit), or the people who appreciate complexity and depth?
[22:23] Phelan> yep, it is discussed.. we are discussing a lot, but that kind of suggestions would be best in the board in a new section so it wont get lost.
I'm looking forward to the creation of that forum.

We would have some GF haters to go with the SoE haters... together, they could come up with conspiricy theories about SoE and GF joining together and buying every game on the market and having a NGE for each of them.
Ignoring every player, And attempting to stop themselves from making money :p

(lol)

Are you saying the folk at SOE had (have) no common sense ?...

Hmm, well, to answer your "what if" question, simply put: this new game would no longer be the Saga of Ryzom (erm, excuse me, "Ryzom"), I would end my subscription immediately, and a load of other players would probably beat me to the cancel button. That's all I can think of -- sorry I can't offer anything constructive but this thread just rings of insignificance. GameForge is in control now, that's all there is to it; if you're truly worried about the fate of this game remember that you're not in the least bit alone.

Hmmm... From memory, will not search now in log, but he says about quest for new players coming from silan, to make the transition to ML smothest, not about make the game quest-driven.

About the bosses not so bad idea; Is one of the main entertaiment for the high levelers...
