I love the thought of our Homins growing old, could you imagine if they grew old and would eventually die? Although it is terribly morbid to cast thought onto, being that my Grandfather just passed away, there is something beautiful about our little guys having a last day to say goodbye...or to have a ceremony passing their abilities off to a new character..
..or am I just up too late? lol

No its not just the visual look I was talking about, I really meant aging then permadeath in the case of characters. With aging the homins should not be with so much energy.
I particularly like this idea, here the old homins would burn out more energy quickly because of their growing physical feebleness.

i.e while training (grinding) here is a good idea to get rid of catalyzers for those that insist. Which would bring all homins on equal field.. Its a basic solution at the least. But I doubt that the catalysers would disappear. Lets look it it this way the veteran players often have complained that they had to go through their goals with out the catalysers, Its been a constant augment here in the forums. The new comers are practically blazing through their levels. Even in my own guild Atys Ghosts, I cant seem to accept how much we are spoiling them... but we are still doing it.
But if Hunger, Thirst & Tiresome is implemented, when fully energized there will be slight bonus in experience points equal to all. Its more realistic and stable. And would also slow down the high speed grind as they have to stop when they are tired, to rest and nourish themselves before continuing.

Homins becoming old and homins continuing to be young there should be a reason - some mechanics behind it. Maybe there should be a consumable berry that would preserve homin youth, which can be dug up just like seeds and wood? etc..? and if not on it regularly you would age & eventually death? And homins with children. How transfer of attributes should be made. An exact copy of skills or half of the skills? or a general points worth customization of the skills?
Just some ideas.
How can it all fit together?
eh.. yes its all very complicated to get in game but it would renew the game as a whole adding new possibilities and a sense of progression than eternal life and immortality.

The Mektoubs become hungry and eventually run out of energy if not fed properly. But in the case of homins...wouldnt buying good food and fluids to please yourself be great? Of course we do that in role-play BUT I mean in-game. I propose a new GUI element, a gauge that shows your current energy and it will go down slowly depending on how much you work yourself running, fighting, casting affects it.. actually just about any physical activity. As we know each and every homin is a really tough cookie and their energy can last quite a while but in the situation where their energy falls below 40% of their total the homins will use up extra effort in actions in casting costs, fighting costs, reduced running speed etc...
This will bring about lots of opportunities and the bars in towns will usually be filled with hard working homins quenching their thirst, having a bite or just having a good time. And the parties will never be the same. Just imagine the bars with a good menu with excellent selection? not to mention the real value it brings to dappers.
In treks and long events the homins will have to stock their supplies and much more. Also in full energy a little bonus wouldn't hurt, gives a good reason to be physically energized.

A consumable berry...
Life expansion Drugs ayone..? Wouldn´t want to see a cold turkey then...
Man, what a fight would break out over these. -.-
But yes, it would be kinda cool to see yourself ageing, but it would hurt either.

Re: Homin Aging...
I can see why some of you like it and would shake up the established feel that can end up in a game but I'm a slow slow leveler, the thought of my character probably dieing of old age before I get something apart from harvest past 100 and starting from scratch again .... I don't think I'd have the motivation to do it more then once and after a second or third death from old age with my skill being lower each time then the last I'd probably stop bothering.acridiel wrote:But yes, it would be kinda cool to see yourself ageing, but it would hurt either.

Of course not just about anyone can dig it up like ambers and seeds

My second post edited to avoid confusions. I was thinking not like a drug, the berry just has some rejuvenating properties. So as to prevent aging for those who don't want to, homins are more or less like a plant with sap for blood and all. And plants can be nourished and preserved, just like that the these berries would rejuvenate and keep a homin well preserved from rotting away.

Just my thoughts. A lot of people here complaints about the fast-levelers, and for them this could be a solution. But for the people leveling up very slow, like me, what happens?
In any way, from a dev point of view, the aging is a bad idea. A lot of people remains here because they have rearched theyr levels, and now they are making other things different than grid; they make politics, trading inter-guild, battles, events, and so on.
If that people want return to grind, then they create a new char. I'm sure that, if theyr chars dead, a lot of players will simply leave the game.
From a idealistic RP point of view is very pretty, age and death, but from a gaming point of view is, IMHO, a bad idea.

Re: Homin Aging...
Well I don't level at all any more, I spend most of my time on my Ring scenarios. When I do get in-game I would spend some time with my guildies, helping them out, trek them to the regions, help them move their packers from one land to another or in rare occasion go digging in fount.
Olca has been around for a while, and I have been leveling only very moderately with not the intention to level. Here I do not have a goal to reach 250. I merely want to stand my own ground and be helpful in the mean time. My levels are more or less moderate so there is no need for me to spend time grinding.
Anyhow lets focus on how some homins age and other set of homins i.e. players don't at the moment? A reason, lets find that first.
We can adapt that same reason or 'mechanics' to prevent aging when or if it is implemented. So that those wishing to continue on living young can do so, and those that wish to go through the natural lifespan can do that as well. In that way both sides are happy.
Its already like that, there are old NPCs but only young player characters, so what are these characters doing secretly to preserve their youth? Lets find out their secret - any suggestions? fire away.

Re: Homin Aging...
A story explenation is easy compared to the game balance of it. Do the imortal characters have to do something to keep from aging? How hard do you make that? Will they then feel like they are forced into doing something they don't enjoy so they can play the game the way they want? Does the thing they have to do to stay unaging need repeating constantly to keep them 'imortal'? If yes doesn't that inflict a hardcore playstyle on anyone that wants that and if they decide they need a break of a week or two from the game do they risk coming back to find that they've died of old age while away? Then for the now aging characters ... what benefits would they think they deserve over the imortal players for their choice to age? Should they level faster? Doesn't that just makes them quicker to advance but over time weaker then the imortals? Would they then feel aging should be the base state and imortals have to work hard for their 'reward'?clyne wrote:Its already like that, there are old NPCs but only young player characters, so what are these characters doing secretly to preserve their youth? Honestly I can't see aging and non aging working on the same server.
Re: Homin Aging...
Well I guess it doesn't matter and everyone has their own opinion. If this is such a harsh topic for several to digest - sorry that I brought it up.
Its still open up for constructive discussion to actually make suggestions to make it work. Than say no, no and more nos. Without suggesting or thinking better ways to make this work.
Otherwise discussion ended and I would be more than glad to request closure of the thread.
Understand that I, the person who brought it up here don't wish my characters to age - I would simply hate it if that were to happen beyond my control. The idea behind this thread is not an yes or no debate or flame but instead to find a way to make this work. We all know it wouldn't be implemented in-game. I cant see game forge too making such huge changes.
