there is no money changing hands atm. it's just "I promise to pay when needed" registration.

It is only a pledge, no money have been transfered. I.e. when/if ryzom.org gets the oppertunity to buy the game it have a good idea of how much money they could recieve from those that have pledged money.

*yawn* He still stole our info from the databases. So right of the bat his ethics are definately in question. What makes you think he'll shape up even if he gets an offer (based on promise rings)?

I hope he doesnt get it tbh
I'd prefer if the game ws professionally run by people who have the funds to play with and make this game better.

Seems to me the main interest of Ryzom.org is to get their hands on the code and graphics rights, I guess they were better protected in Nervax than the players account names and emails, or just to big to put on a disk.
The saving of the game 'as is' is not on their main objective, IMHO.

exactly... which is why I hope X doesn't get it. I'd rather see Ryzom walk off into the sunset than become mutated, buggy, and horribly warped before finally dying.
not to mention hosting issues....

I hope a company with some experience and funds takes over Ryzom.
I agree I think this would be the worste possible thing that could happen. Its a nice jesture, but would result in a very large mess of code and no real game anymore at best a few scattered servers here and there and at worste a pile of code that is just being made a larger mess on a few scattered servers here and there. I dont think I want to play ryzom on someones "home server" which would likely be an old computer sitting in a guys den with no real new content and a server that is up and down according to the guys real world work schedule. Blech ...

Not to mention that it will be far few money if is needed to convert cash. Promise money, and more this sums, it's always easy. Give the cash is far, far difficult.
I think that, at the end of the day, the real money will be at max the half of the pledges' money.

Other (unrelated) potential issues:
- Open code means that exploits and bugs may be easier to spot (and supposedly, fix, one of the strengths of open source), but in any case, it is up to the player to use them or not... but potentially new hacks, bots, etc. could appear (full disclosure of what the client sees and knows... not bad.... packet format including information of data sent and received, easily modified).
- Something I am not sure I fully grabbed: characters and avatars are property of the players.... policy-less upload and download? avatar cloning? cheat codes? Does this mean I can upload my avatar, download, transfer it to another server, etc?. What does "property of the player" mean and specially in the context of the "planned official shard"?
I have not made up my mind about this. It seems a noble and interesting idea, specially including the fact of having a professional MMRPG open, regardless if the game stays as is or not. For programmers, this is a golden opportunity. The part I am more concerned about is the "saga" aspect of what we know about Ryzom. Wait and see, I guess.
