The IMO safest way to pull a mob out of a group is to fear it (don't hold the spell). This aggros it, but does not activate the social aggro of nearby mobs so you can let it follow you to a safe location.
Fear actually can trigger social aggro, if the mob is close enough others of its kind when it recovers from the fear.
But still fear is a pretty safe way to pull, as the fearing itself wont trigger assists, usually the mob is away from the herd when it recovers, and it won't trigger assist if it runs through the herd on its way to the caster.
Afaik taunt can trigger assists.

Another method of pulling a single social mob from a group:
Use a ranged weapon at max range (hit fire and walk towards the mob until it hits the target). Then pull back - the "center" of the fight is located on you, not the mob - so the social mobs near your target don't aggro (beware - the ones near you will aggro!).
This differs from ranged magic, where the fight "center" is on the mob (so attracts aggro from there).
Another use for ranged weapons..............
(and this means you can level ranged on herds of bodocs, Capys, etc. without starting a stampede).

A gruop I was with were successfully using this method on Raspals a day or so ago
.
LOL.. I used to do that as well, but of course only with none-agros.
Sometimes you have a certain situation though, where you pull out one mob to the rest of your group and start attacking and accidently overlooked another curious mob that came along. So be carefull with that
Then I got taunt and ever since that he worked nicely.
