Notice my first comment - I understand the need for a level cap.
I believe that 21 is simply too low.
You say 21 is enough, but when the levels go quickly, as they do at the start, if you haven't forgotten, that is not much time.
One of the things that hooks people is the community. And that takes time.
If you don't progress beyond 21, you will either stop playing or sub.
I think that 21 is far too low a point to force a decision. I think 30 or 40 is far more realistic in terms of both understanding and appreciating the game and its mechanics (and stanza flexibility in magic kicks in around lvl 20), as well as really appreciating the community you find yourself in.
I hope for Nevrax's sake as well as for Atys' sake that they quickly adjust the levels. I know that I would not have subbed if this had been the case when I joined. (that was back in the days of 2 week unlimited trials where I got to the mainland and went up to lvl 75 and had joined a guild before it ran out - and it wasn't until my second trial a month later that I decided to sub).
Level cap on Starter Island
Re: Level cap on Starter Island
I personally think 30 would have been a better lvl, but at least they upped it to 21 to show the split.
Re: Level cap on Starter Island
I'm gonna post in this thread as well but only a short comment. The veteran players are saying its a smart move, but I along with every new player who has commented has said "i would not have subscribed if the level cap was at 21 when I tried out this game" I have searched most threads on this subject but have yet to have found any new player who has said otherwise. I would think this would be a good indication of the marketability of the decision. Also note most of use "new guys" are pointing to a time limit not a level cap which would also deal with the "Freeloader" problem just as effectively if not better even.
Just some food for thought

Re: Level cap on Starter Island
Well, in my opinion the biggest problem with a max level of 21 for the trial is as follows:
Most mmorpgs give what, 14 days, (if they're a bit cheap say 7 days) of trial to their members. That's pretty neat. Ryzom gives unlimited playtime, but what the hell is the meaning of unlimited playtime if you can only get to level 21?
I'm just saying that, for some of us, the people that might be a little bit more hardcore in our playing than others, max level 21 is like
ONE DAY TRIAL.
And a one day trial is, in my opinion, the most rediculous thing i've ever heard.
Why not give it 14 days instead? Any casual player will reach at least level 20 in most skills, while people that prefer to test game mechanics to their limits while trial'ing to find out wether it's the game they want or not can do so?
One day trial? meh!
If nothing else at least up it to level 30, it'll still take the freeloafers off but allow people to delve just a little bit deeper into the pond. And remember not everyone "decides wether they want an mmo after a few days of playing". That's highly individual.

Re: Level cap on Starter Island
I have just left another MRPG that I have been playing for over 3 years. It has only been my 3rd day playing RYZOM, so far I am enjoying it. My goal is to learn the basics of the game, get used to the screen menu's and build my character to a point I can move on to see whats new elsewhere. When are you supposed to leave and at what level so that a noob has a chance of survival. What are the recomendations???
Re: Level cap on Starter Island
You could leave the starter island as soon as you made character if you wanted and still be able to survive on the mainland. I always tell people to leave the mainland when their comforable enough with the controls or when they've done all the missions if thats their thing.snlecher wrote:I have just left another MRPG that I have been playing for over 3 years. Well to some extent it depends on which server, Cho has the youngest population, so guilds are starting up and all recruits are of similar level, which is a very organic start.
It would be fine to leave at 15, but a guilds support structure would be needed to smooth things over for you.
21 would see you leaving with a good working knowledge of the game mechanics, that would leave you pretty self sufficiant as well.
Hope this helps, IIRC there are quests that can bag you cool armour and weapon on Silan, so make sure to do those, you get them from the fight guy, the mage guy and the the somethig -Strong guy.
