Do not make idle assumptions on the relationship between the Zoraï, the Kami, and Ma-Duk - it is not for you to know or understand.
Couldnt have put it better.

Intolerance is born out of ignorance.

According to the lore, the masks are a part of identifying with the Kami - so wouldn't it make some sense for the masks to be thrown aside or eliminated when a Zorai renounces?
The mask is genetically sealed to the face of the Zorai. It could not be removed nor more than you could remove a trykers face.

That's how I play it... it was done because it was "the way things are done". My character is proud of his mask, for his own reasons, and will never change the pattern on it, also for reasons of his backstory.

The mask is our culture.
It makes us who we are.

what of zorai born outside of the tradition and ceremony?
what of zorai who deny the faith of their childhood, and consider the mask a brand of their former master?
what of the real face that was, does it exist under the mask, or ruined forever?

I do wish we had a little variation in skintone allowed, perhaps got from the cosmetics people in game. I think ganguro Tryker and Fyros with a more deep desert on african complexion would be interesting.
