Yeah, it can be really fun hunting a bunch of herbivores when the close-by, but out of range carnivores decide that it is dinner time :D

I love that way that the mobs interact, migrate and change their behaviour depending on the season. A spot that is good for hunting in winter, maybe useless in the summer and so on.

Wow, thanks for all the responses! It's good to hear that there are tactics and strategies to this, and it's just not just chaos and mass dying all the time :)

I sitll have a lot of stuff to do on the island, I think. But, I look forward to running into some of you on the mainland in the near future!

Thanks again, the community in this game is just amazing.

Also, no one has specifically mentioned it, and you probably have already figured it out on your own, but always, always improve your hit points when you have the skills/level to do that. Your hp on the island is really low and it only takes one or two hits to die if you haven't maxed them out. Get jewelry and armor that gives bonuses to hp. The max bonus on a single item on the island is 25 I believe. But that alone gives you an extra 250 hp. Anyway, just wanted to throw that out there. I died a fair amount myself on the island until I made a real effort to max my hp and that helped a lot. Before that, those raiders killed me in 2 (sometimes 3) shots.
