Which ever way you decide to go, if you are looking for some hunting buddies when you get to Yrkanis, I have some fresh-from-the-isle Guildies that may still be within your level range. Our Guild is currently nuetral, so you won't need to worry about offending anyone's politics.
It all boils down to what feels right to you. If you aren't going to be as happy following Karavan than Kami... don't, or if Kami seems like the wrong path, go Karavan. It might take a little while to get your faction squared away, but you need to do what makes the game fun for you.
Otherwise, what's the point?

[/IC] (just teasing, I only added the IC bit for a lark; it wasn't the main point I was making but you knew that, of course.)
Yep! and you did bring up the good point of reading the others races histroys too while making that side point

Before you go make a crazy decision-like stop being a matis, my main character is a Matis-Kami follower. The only hard part about being a matis-kami is doing a few extra missions to gain kami fame. But I promise you, it's worth it

You wont find any Matis aligned Kami guilds (unless I'm missing something), but I know of quite a few Kami players that "hang out" in Yrkanis. I used to keep my packers there, but since I'm to lazy to turn off my faction tag most times-eh, well, dying while crafting sucks
Would I be able to find a guild that could help me out in those lower levels, or will I be half a world away from them?
Most guilds have higher level players-which makes trekking a lot easier. For example, my guild, Team Spirit (a tryker-kami guild) is known to trek a lot. Many players enjoy trekking people, and many players enjoy helping new players. Unless you run into one of the super-RP Karavan, being Kami will not effect you or your game play.
How many Matis players have gone Kami? And is it a tough row to hoe?
There are not a ton of Matis-Kami, but it's always fun to be in the minority. And I promise you, it isn't "a tough row to hoe."
Good Luck. If you need help with anything, send me a /tell ingame or a private message here on the forums and I will be happy to answer your questions.

Everyone else seems to have Summed up the overall picture. But if you ever decide to go Kami and need help to get to what ever Guild you join up with's "homeland" I would be glad to help out. Dragons of Shadow btw are Neutral, Located in Zora, and Most of us are around your skill level.

Part of my motivation is to help with the Kami numbers as well. From a certain other, extremely long thread, I gather that Kami could use another meatshield or two. I happily present myself as that meatshield. Besides, I've always had a certain sympathy for the underdog.
Don't believe what anyone says about the numbers. You must see for yourself in-game and make your own conclusion or you will be tricked and deceived.
Choosing the "underdog" may not be a wise choice anyway as it will continue to fluctuate as it has in the past.

bah, thats coming from a karavan!
Go with Kami all the way! We welcome converts to the benevolent light of Ma'Duk. The Karavan are evil, sneaky, and like to hurt our beautiful Atys. No need to affiliate with such rifraff.

ohh subversive... but flawed.. if it fluctuates then you will be the underdog again at some point... it therefore makes no difference..

In Ryzom character race is a 'skin' with no advantage/disadvantage.
Anyway, if you want to experience life as a Zorai I can make you a mask with elastic bands that clip over your ears

That was my point. You'll be the underdog at some point no matter which side you pick, so it shouldn't affect your choice.

Actually there is one significant difference between the races, spell resistances.. and here Matis get the dirty end of the stick, having a high resistance to Poison - which just about any piece of trash jewellery will then max out

leaving them more vulnerable to the other elemental spells..
As for not being proud of some of Matis's past deeds, look at why why - despite their own history with the Matis, Trykers still consider us (yes I am Matis) the lesser evil. Being fed to the Kitin by your beloved Zoraï would make any race doubt their supposed spirituality and superiority..
