While I agree Alienware is Great, they are noticbly far more expensive for an equivicaly powered system from other areas. I'm assuming that Keiko is looking at Dell because its either being paid for by the Parent or from Finacial Aid.
This is what I managed to price for a Comparable system to what I suggested from Dell, *just providing an example and comparison*.

Processor: Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor T5600 1.83GHz 2MB Cache 667MHz FSB
Operating System (Office software not included): Genuine Windows® XP Professional with Service Pack 2
Display: Alienware® m5750 17" WideXGA+ 1440 x 900 LCD - Saucer Silver
Memory: 2GB Dual Channel DDR2 SO-DIMM at 667MHz - 2 x 1024MB
Hard Drive: Single Drive Configuration - 100GB Serial ATA 1.5Gb/s 7,200 RPM w/ NCQ & 8MB Cache
Primary CD ROM/DVD ROM: 8X Dual Layer DVD+/-RW / 24X CD-RW Combo w/Software
Video/Graphics Card: 256MB ATI Mobility™ Radeon® X1800
Sound Card: Intel® 7.1 High-Definition Audio

This system costs $2600 ->AFTER ALL<- of the rebates for Students.

how much dollar you got to spend kei?
I could price you somthing up that will run nice from the dell site according to that if you like?
I run Ryzom on a laptop and it runs perfectly no trouble..
SAmsung X60 15.4" widescreen, intel centrino duo 2ghz with 2 gigs of ram and a radion x1600 512 meg graphics card. happily runs at full resolution with everything on max at an op battle without really lagging.. 15-20 fps..
Somthing with those sort of specs should make Keiko a very happy girl i should imagine .. got mine for around £1200.. but i get (VERY) good prices from a works supplier...

Get a Macbook Pro. You can get a decent graphic card, decent amount of ram, and the ability to have a decent operating system to boot. A computer that doesn't weigh 25#, and has some sense of style. Then when you want to play Ryzom, either dual boot or get Parallels for virtualization of Windows.

Don't hate what you don't know!

Well, thanks a ton for all of the information. My main problem is trying to convert computer "language" into simple english. My computer knowledge isn't so great at the moment..but hey, college and all that. And, my knowledge of laptops is even worse. I've only ever messed around with one at school. I was told that laptops cannot be upgraded like a desktop computer can, as well?

I am not quite sure what you mean here. I dont want to think it's the wrong thing :/
michielb wrote:That said onboard video...onboard audio.
Meaning basic audio that comes on a laptop? And wouldn't video have to do with your graphics card?

And I've gathered, I think. That 2GB is the best RAM? I have to be able to use this laptop for more than just Ryzom. School-related programs and the like.

A processer is like my desktop having a Pentium 4? I didn't know you could customize that part?

And Daemion, hun. I believe i was just a bit confused by a few of your posts-but dont worry, I'm easily confused. In your first one...Post 9 is that directed to me? And this one Post 11 is that directed to Data? Because those two have different info on them..and like I said, easily confused :/

I'm probably supposed to stay under 3k American Dollars.
I did just call my "maker of price range" and she said something about getting price quotes from about 3 different places. So, if anyone knows of any good computer buying places..I'm all ears.

And what does £1200 convert to in American dollars? I always forget what the difference in price is.

Again, Thanks for all of the computer help *hugs*

You can tooooottally get a sweet machine for under 3 grand.

I don't know what you are planning on doing with is, if its for school/games, or you want the ultimate gamming machine.

Dell has a large range of laptops from business to gaming (XPS). I think that you would fall into the middle group, cause you are a student, and likes to game. I dont think you should spend 3 grand, but i posted some links i found from dell below.

Alienware laptops are awesome, and it seems that they have lowered their prices some. They are great for gaming, but my problem with them is they look like aliens, and i often use my laptop in a formal enviornment... and the alien head just doesnt do it for me.

Specs you want:

Screen size - at least 15.4 in (17" or higher are awesome)
Processor - 64 bits are very nice, but not necessary. Dual core is somethig to look for... depending on the processor, try and get above 2Ghz
Video Card - 128 MB will handle ryzom just fine, but 256 will run smoother.
RAM - you need to have at least 1 GB (more would be cool, but 1 GB is plenty)
Hard Drive - no lower than 60 GB imo (but that wont affect gameplay)

Others will say you need to have Top-of-the-line, but you dont need it. Its not necessary, especially when you are a student.

With the specs i listed above, you will be just fine. I promise.

Here are my suggestions (within $3,000)
My Reccomendation

Sweet Laptop

Ultimate Laptop

Dell batteries explode on planes (not that it matters but we were talking about it today) xD

I'm using an HP zd8316 here and it really does perfect for SoR and eveything else I've tried with it :) (bit heavy tho...)

There is onboard audio in laptops, they typicaly arent the best, but unless your planning to play alot of music or anything that should be sufficiant.
As far as your Graphics are concerned, your Onboard graphics in laptops cannot run Ryzom. This piece you have to upgrade to play Ryzom. Most places only give you a few choices for upgrades, but most of time the avalible upgrades are sufficiant or more than to Run it.
d29565 wrote: And I've gathered, I think. That 2GB is the best RAM? I have to be able to use this laptop for more than just Ryzom. School-related programs and the like.
No actualy 2 GB is not the most you can get on some laptops. However, Unless you are a 3rd-4th year Computer Science Major, 2GB of Ram is far more than you will ever need for anything School related. 2GB just happens to be the most you can get 'normaly' on a resonably priced Consumer Laptop.

Sorry bout that, the First one was intended for you as an example of what you may want to look at from Dell (Dell will probably have your best value overall in performance and price). The 2nd post was kinda twards both you and data, It's a price comparison of a roughly equal system at Alienware.com as the one at Dell.

I would recomend pricing laptops at Dell, Toshiba, Alienware, and HP/Compaq. The last one is just an extra option, I only threw it in there as one to look at if the "maker of price range" says no to any of the others, the HP/Compaq systems are less expensive generaly but they dont have the options the others have and dont get quite as powerful in "computing power".

A side note* As i mentioned before, 2GB of ram is more than sufficant to run any program you will encounter in College outside of Computer Science and Certain Engineering Degrees. Matter of fact, almost any of the "bare-bones" systems at any of the sites, will run your everyday software you will most likely use in College. The only reason the 2GB has been recomended is for Ryzom. Also, Hard drive speeds. What people were talking about is the hard drives RPM, Revolustions Per Minute. To be honest with you, 5400rpm on a laptop harddrive, assuming you have every thing else decent, is more than sufficiant to run Ryzom, and certainly any other Program for School. Any faster than that and the Price will jump fairly quickly. What you should really look at is how much Hard drive space you will need. Unless you are doing alot of Graphics work, Video editing or similarly big install sized programs, 60-80 GB of space is more than enough. If you have the extra "money" a 100-200GBs worth of Space woulnd hurt. Depending on your College/University you may want to make sure your laptop has both Wireless and Lan options for internet. Most of them will have both built in. If you find one that meets all the other requirements that you are possibly looking for but are unsure as to the Wireless/Lan connections, Gimme a yell and ill look into that particular model for ya and anwser that part or any other questions.

Actualy Dell and Toshiba both were having troubles with one of their Lithium batteries. Any of the Laptops now, are past the Particular Recal and should be safe from that problem.
