Thanks for the responses.

I'm curious - are there taverns in the main part of the game? Any indoors areas? It's winter at the moment and I feel I should be indoors with a hot mug of the Ryzom equivalent of hot cocoa (or a beer - hey, anytime of the year is a good time for beer).

Also, what about heavier clothing for winter months? I feel a bit chilly in what is essentially a sari when it's snowing.

Finally, is there any way to change one's appearance? I'm happy with the way I look right now, but hairstyle changes and a new mask every now and then might be a good thing.

There are some indoor areas, though I have only really explored the Matis villages as of yet. Actually, there are taverns, but woefully empty. Hairstylists and tattoo artists can help you customize your appearance on the mainland as well, and it appears that there are more selections available than during character creation too.

As for clothes... if you drink enough... you won't much care what you have on... but there are more "covering" garments available. ;)

Eat lots of peppery aromatic plants, but then be careful about how close you get to your friends ;)
The taverns are so quiet that they forgot to stock any drinks, or maybe it was the other way around? :(
Thesos pub and Fairhaven cocktail lounge quite often see parties and gatherings, anyway.

It seems the developers have done a good job of fostering a community spirit among the players, but I feel it's essential for an MMOG to have some sort of tavern atmosphere, and so many MMOGs seem to have empty taverns and that's a real shame. A tavern should be 'the place' to join with other players to do quests, but if there's no 'hook' to get players into taverns in the first place players aren't going to go to them.

The addition of musical or dance abilities would, I feel, help taverns gain atmosphere. If every player could play music or dance they would choose to go to taverns to perform during those times when they felt too lazy to do quests or PvP/PvE, and the taverns would serve as a place fror a bit of light entertainment. I think it would bring so much to the game.

On Leanon the Event team has come up with a Tavern-Night in Pyr every Monday, hosted by two (Guide-controlled) NPCs. Sadly there´s only a select few people that attend regularily :(
Collix the Inkeeper and his Help Auraria tend to be quite talkative, spreading news and rumors (upcomming events are often announced this way). And generaly interact with us players that come there to have a good Drink and some good company.
The Tavern is "Neutral Ground" by Houselaw and any who starts a fight over Allegiance is "complimented" out by Patrons and Owner alike. Although a Pie-battle has taken place once during a Birthday celebration...

Maybe your Event Team can come up with a simmilar concept?

Welcome to Ryzom! I have bad news and good news...

If you are mainly interested in the visual aspect of the entertainer profession I fear that you will be disappointed. You can try to chain a few emotes or simulate some acrobatic dance in mock fights... but you cannot go too far with this. While this game is much superior to SWG in many respects, the long and the short of it is that Ryzom doesn't have an entertainer profession.

On the other hand, if you enjoy roleplaying and think that the main job of an entertainer is to socialize... this may be the ideal game for you. Most players are really nice and mature and people do not tolerate crude / offensive behavior.
You can have a rich set of clothes from "very revealing" to "very covered" and you can combine various pieces / colors as you wish.

My suggestion is to join a roleplaying guild and see how it goes - I'm sure all servers have several such guilds, for obvious reasons you should choose the server speaking your native language.

I'm a musician in SWG (I've been playing as a completely non-combat character for 2 1/2 years) and I'm looking for some similar content in Ryzom - I'm only really at home if I can play or dance in a tavern. Does Ryzom have any musical content? If not, is there any on the horizon?

Thanks.
There has been a bit of trouble with the new company that took over Horizon (storing customer information unecrypted on easily accesses servers, billing people after they have trie to cancel their account, and being hard to contanct to cancel the account or talk to about being billed after you canceled). I don't know how true all of those rumors about the company are but I'd watch them for a while to see how it goes before going near it if you decide you'd like too.

you know, Why not steal the Battle fatique and Ent/Dancer thing from SWG?

It would fit, and SWG isnt using it.

Little bit-o-coding, and some new animations, new skill line.... Done.

SWG doesn't use it because basically it doesn't work. As the SWG developers found out, there's no better way to split a community than to force players to interact when they don't want to. Many combat players didn't want to take time out from fighting to visit the cantina and entertainers weren't happy about being made slaves to the combat classes.

If entertainers are going to be in this game it should be just for the fun of it, as SWG is now. The way to do it is to permit lots of entertainer creative content - dances, songs, etc., just as SWG's entertainers were meant to be. Oh, and unlike SWG - don't allow entertainer players to play while away from the keyboard - that's mostly what killed the entertainer profession - at one time it was one of the most popular professions in SWG, but AFKers made the profession a laughing stock, and no one wants to play or dance next to a bunch of players who can't be bothered to show up in person to play.
