One reason is Eve let a lot of free time when you mine or travel.
You tend to surf the Eve forum and post more frequently than for Ryzom because you have a lot more time to do.

Second, Eve has a lot more customers than Ryzom.

Aye, it's not because of the game itself, just because ppl on Aripostle are ubercool lol.
Want some flamewar?
Learn french and have a look at Aniro lol, last thread 24 pages in 3 days: they even try to rip Gm's guts out...

Tho the war on Aniro apparently doesn't stop on forums, they seem to play completely differently: lot of RP K/K and they just slay each other everytime they can :)
They seem to like it tho: its ok, its RP lol :)

I suppose Eve has far more of an emphasis on moral freedom whereas Ryzom is made more with creative freedom in mind.

Eve's a harsher game altogether. Apart from things that are clearly exploits and/or exceptionally unfair, you are pretty much free to do what you please to other players. Scamming is allowed in Eve. Any corp (guild) can declare war on any other corp, allowing them to kill members of that corp anyplace, any time. Nowhere to hide. You can physically attack any player anywhere (although the cops will have you for dinner if you do it in the high-security systems - even this is a fair trade-off for some players) so it tends to promote a more dog-eat-dog attitude among the players, which tends to carry over onto the forums.

In Ryzom, the attitude is "Hey, the more the merrier, let me know if you need any help" whereas in Eve its "I'm not here to protect you from your own stupidity. I'm a space-pirate, not your mother."

The point about Eve giving more time to do the forum thing I guess is partly true. When I play Eve, if I alt-tabbed fom my usual activities to post on the forums, I'd fully expect to be dead when I tabbed back to it so it depends on the level of risk in your play. I think you'll find that most forum posts are written while at work. This one certainly is ;-D

Aha - loving it. Youve just been immortalised in a sig. That is until I find something equally amusing 2 or 3 weeks down the line :D

One thing about EVE that is very different from Ryzom is the massive death penalty. That may have a lot to do with the different “feel” each forum has.

There is nothing like being pirated to get the blood flowing and the flame threads flying.

So PvP death on EVE really, really hurts? I bet that does cause some bitterness! Hmmm ;)

I found EVE to be to both ruthless and boring; nothing quite like spending 30 minutes or more traveling and get blown away 'just because' with little to no chance to get away, much less defend yourself. I found gate campers to be particularily distasteful - I can't say how many times I gated and find cloaked campers waiting for me. I also really liked the pirates who would keep a high police faction so you couldn't even place a bounty on their head when they did blow you away.

Needless to say, I found EVE not to be the game for me.

It all depends what ship & equipment you use. If you get blown up, you lose the ship and most of its fittings will be destroyed. You can insure a ship but not always for its full value. Since the ships range from 10,000 isk up to several billion, the death penalty really varies dependant on how much you were prepared to risk in the first place. Yeah, its harsh, but that risk of loss is what gets the adrenaline going, quite unlike any other game I've played. Sometimes after a good fight, I still get the shaky hands :D It can be quite invigorating. I do like a relaxing game too, Ryzom seems to be a nice contrast from my experience so far. Time will tell whether the PVP here will hold any interest for me...but its not really why I'm here anyway.

I'll resist the temptaion to answer this post. I'll just suggest we stay on the topic of Eve / Ryzom comparison and save stuff like this for MMORPG.com ;)

7 days a week ya whuss :p

got my deimos blown up about a week ago on a lvl 3 mission (think losing your boosted sup zun amps to a gingo in pyr). feeling pretty gutted at the moment as 1. i can't afford to replace it and 2. pretty embarrasing to lose such an expensive ship :p

there are 2 levels of death.
1. you get your ship blown up. yourr charachter gets put in an pod that you can warp out, get another ship and jump right in.
2. some *%@~#& blows your pod up. this kills your current charachter and you must activate your clone. you have to buy clones and the more money you spend the more skill points you keep. however any implants you have (makes training skills faster and are very expensive) are lost.

death in eve is a big deal unlike here in ryzom. multiply that by the huge number of players in eve (20k+ at the same time on the same server) and the forum isn't just a flame fest it's a british barbeque napalm extravaganza
