OOC :
Worth nothing is that most of the laptops harddrives spins at 4200rpm, which makes read / load speeds increase thus it takes longer to read the information into the RAM. And if there is little RAM it will start swapping, thus writing memory info into a file on the harddrive and there is even more work for the already "slow" disk to do.

i would have said very little until i upgraded and moved from min to max settings, it's a different game.

thought the same, for me its just the other way round, burned 2 of my 3 RAM(1536MB>512MB) and... OUCH!!! bigtime!!!
gone from all medium to max settings down to all min is a real spoilsport for me...
thats why i´m not playin as much as i want to...
but going from 30-50s on loadscreen to 10+min isn´t quit fun and being used to a overwhelmingly lush´n ritch enviroment to a nearly WoW like one... *sighs*
and to top it all... money for new hardware isn´t coming round till next year... late next year... if i´m lucky.
sometimes it shucks to be me

Very true however, Ram, proccessor, and Video card will make up for the Laptop hardrives immensly. My laptop loads and runs Ryzom very fast and smoothly, *note to sam when he reads this, Yes I make absolutly sure my homework for the day is DONE, before I log in at all*, anyways the specs are:
2 GHZ Dual core
2 gb ram
Nvidia 7900
200 gb hard drive with spin speed of 5400
Takes from char select screen to in game about just under 2 mins roughly, depends on what other programs I ran earlier to do my College school work. and I can run at max details to the Moniors max rez of 1400x900....(for those who would want to know my average FPS is over 60)
But back on topic a bit, Uppgrading the ram on your computer will do you a World of good, and I do mean it, adding another 512 can cut the time in half quite often.

Here is me thinking that getting from clicking the play Ryzom icon to actually playing the game which took 1 min or so was slow. How wrong was I.
My system specs:
AMD 64 X2 Dual Core 4400+ 2.2Ghz
2Gb of RAM
7900GT graphics card with 512Mb memory.
600Gb hardrive, (over 342 free).

Appart from Dual Core 3,8 Ghz exactly the same System
Man, I have to upgrade, takes almost two minutes to reach Ingame *LOL*
It´s funny, I noticed that even Winamp can slow down the "connection", if I aktivate it (and listen to music) before Ryzom it takes about 2 minutes to reach Ingame, if not its about half the time. *LOL*
Ryzom sure IS demanding on the specs.

Cheap speedup fix for _everyone_ in loading times:
Defrag your hard disk. Like... regularly.
Once a week _minimum_. I do not kid you on how much difference this makes.

Disk Cleanup, then Defrag...
I run on almost max settings with:
AMD Athlon XP 1.7ghz
1gb DDR-Ram
nVidia GeForce 5200 video card (128x128)
Broadband internet access.
The load screen takes about 4-5 minutes... but I run the game smoothly once in. I run disk cleanup after every software install, and defrag every 3-4 days. I repeat defrag til most of the little red lines go away.

LoL Rothimar, that's the purpose of defrag, I love the way you simplify things
