Yes, ranged could use some improvements.
However, it can still be very effective as-is. It just takes an entirely different mindset to use. You can't fight with it like you do with melee, target and attack. You need to harvest the right materials, craft the right ammo, and have hit-and-run strategy for your hunting.
Launcher is an extremely specialized weapon that you can't really use on a daily basis. There's a reason they let you use rifle to lvl it all the way to 150 first and it's because rifle is much easier to hunt with.
Ranged is not for people who want the simple, easy, or fast way. However, if you take the time to learn the intricacies and tactics you will be effective.

I really, really wished to be a bowman... or at least a riflebowman

What I really wanted was to avoid magic as much as possible. And where did I find myself at lvl 32? Shooting mobs with acid damage and lvl 40 amps, doing 160-170 damage.
In my opinion, offensive magic affliction is slightly overpowered at low levels... and you only need SAP, nothing else really....
Well, at least if I manage to build my char to be a decent ranged fighter, I'll have something to be proud of

Actually, in terms of magic, sap and hp is needed. Affliction uses only sap when it links, but casting it, you may want to use hp and sap. Also, affliction is a very good skill to level, it does wonders in pvp, and I love the effect it has on Vorax (Prime Root critters that are a pain).
As for ranged, it is very effective. But, it takes a lot of dedication as well, and skill. You may be better off leveling another skill first, and once you've "learned the game" go back to ranged. But, honestly, I dont think you have the patience for ranged.
Also, experimenting with a skill cannot ruin you. Dapper is very easy to make, and it is just about impossible to "gimp" yourself skill wise.

I wouldn't say patience, I would rather say: "time"

Once you work+have a family, MMORPG's never get the focus they deserve

1) You have your whole life to play Ryzom (we hope).
2) In 20 minutes running around killing mobs I made 100k on RoS, so yeah dapper enough for packers/apartment is easy to make.
3) Ranged is hard to level just like crafting is hard to level... it has consumables...just like doubletap and others said... it is not for the faint of heart. And when you run out of ammo, you better have another skill to switch to!

I have a quick noob question that I am unable to find the info on the forums so far.
What are the pro's and con's for:
Melee
Ranged
Magic?
I'm a SWG refugee with some WoW experience but I love PvP and before I devout too much time into something I would like to know which way to go for my play style. Thanks

That requires very lengthy discussion to answer in any detail!
Send me a /tell in game and I'd be happy to discuss it in conversation and hit the points that are important to you rather then write an essay here and chance not even mentioning what you want to know

Like Sehraci said, without knowing your playstyle (and if will fit in a classless game) that debate would be endless.
