They all seemed more like WoW/EQ style players, used to quests for XP/loot, and killing mobs for loot instead of crafting materials. I am enjoying the unlimited trial as well, and especially the friendly. mature community. Almost everyone is helpful and willing to give tips/advice.
But I am somewhat worried about heading to the mainland. I've read it's not nearly as populated/busy as the Newbie area, and my bizzare playtimes coupled with my usual tendency to solo might not really fit with SoR's intended style of play. I will have to see how I feel after I have finished all I can in the Ruins of Silan.
Perhaps I am just one of those people still "looking for my next MMO", and jumping from one to the next. Though if that's the case, I'm in trouble, as I've played/tried almost every MMO out there (minus most of the Asian ones).
I have been seeing the mainland increasingly busy as of late, I even went to Zora (quietest main city) last night at 4am UK time and saw no less than 7 players around the stable area. The population is increasing, and you should find no shortage of players on the mainland, especially if you join a main guild.
Of course if you are matis there are always lots of people in Yrkanis
And on the origional subject, I love the RoS trial, I completed all the missions with Kibsy and love it, 5000 times better than the old starter lands, these are always full to bursting point
Go Nevrax *huggles*
Oh and welcome to Ryzom all you new homins *huggles*

Y´know what I find realy funny?
That people complain about an underpopulated Mainland and won´t come over to populate it, bacause it´s "underpopulated".
If noone comes over it´ll stay "underpopulated".
If everyone stays on the Starter Isle, the Mainland will stay "deserted"...
It´s a very simple and logical equasion, isn´t it?
So come on over and do something about the underpopulation!!!
*LOL*

That is a valid response, but I don't think you quite understood what I said. I work weird hours, so much so that there is normally /no one/ around when I play, in almost all the MMOs I've tried. Jumping to the mainland, where the population is already low, adding in the fact that my times are screwy, and the fact that soloing isn't anywhere near as easy as grouping. It comes to the point where I have to decide if logging in , finding no one to team with, then logging out to do something else is something I want to pay $15/month for. I know I can solo, but from what I've seen on the newbie isle, it's far too slow for my tastes.
And I can understand why some people don't move to the mainland. Most people don't think that 1 person can make a difference. And in a way they are right. It takes a lot of people moving to the mainland to make it worthwhile. Others just don't want to fork over the $$, and that's fine too.
Now, you can also say that not moving to the mainland doesn't help and that people should do it anyway, so that things eventually change. But after playing EVE Online for a while, I'm not going to pay for something where things /might/ change down the road. Or for things that are "Coming Soon". I'm basing my experiences on what I see /now/. I still might subscribe for a month, just to get a glimpse of the mainland, but if it ends up the way I've been hearing, I won't be staying.
I don't want to drag this thread down and turn it into a flame-fest or anything. I'm just stating why I'm not moving to the mainland yet. I still think the unlimited trial is an excellent thing, as it's let me slowly get a decent grasp on how the game works. But I do think it's misleading, as the people I've talked to, who for the most part haven't read the forums, have had no idea that the mainland had no quests or loot rewards.
I can see them becoming quite upset once they've jumped over. Luckily for me, I've known that from the start.

After work I play 8am-12 noon MDT (3pm - 7pm BST), or if I'm off, sometime between midnight and noon MDT (7am - 7pm BST). Go play other MMOs at those times, there's never a whole lot of people around. And with Ryzom's lower population, it'd definately be worse.
I've tried soloing even in the newbie island, and it's far too slow for my taste. Teaming is much more effective. But it doesn't matter, as I will probably not subscribe anyway. I won't post here again.
Though before I leave, I think that Nevrax really needs to make it clear how the game is on the mainland. Or at least, the community can ensure that new players are informed of how things work once you make the jump. Just today, I had to tell more than 4 people myself, that the RoS is not how the mainland game is. Many of them were suprised that there were no quests on the mainland, and quite disheartened.
The unlimited trial is great, and helps people learn this far more complicated game at their own pace, before making the decision whether to subscribe or not. But it does give a false impression of the game, and new players may be very upset once they reach the mainland.

I would like to second the intention of the author of this thread. Thanks Nevrax for this wonderful experience to "get to know" Ryzom (for the second time in some cases). I would also like to thank the GM's and SGM's for being so willing to help out the new testers on Silan. I myself have been overwhelmed with kindess and help from the Ryzom team, and I haven't yet compensated them for it. What great service!
We must realize that Silan is not the full game, and is different than the full game. Lets not be critical of this wonderful opportunity Nevrax has bestowed upon us. When I am ready to go to the mainland, I expect a new adventure with new trials, and challanges to overcome.

to be honest you arent really in a position to comment if you havent even seen the mainland, as the quests are pretty identical and there are at least 50 per region. they arent linked together like the RoS ones, and dont give items as we have a player created economy/equipment entirely which is a very good thing. but i replied to your other post in the newbie forum.

Indeed, it is the classic chicken and egg question, where the answer depends on your view/belief.

Well, I'm going to have to check out the mainland in due time. I know this- the quests in the starter area give the game structure and a path for development.
Are you exaggerating or are there really no quests on the mainland? What the heck do players do for fun- explore? pvp? From my time on WoW, I know rewards are a powerful incentive, not that I want SoR to be WoW. But some quests would be nice ya know?

There -are- missions, but all they give you is fame and money. No loot, xp, or storylines in 'em. Just 'go here, do this.'
But meh, they work for me.
