So I guess healing is made for people who don't care about the power of their characters... I mean, you can't even heal yourself or use your beneficial powers on yourself
If you are lvl 250 healer you could make a ton of dapper hiring yourself out to both people needing heals to lvl as well as aid in PvP battles.

Healers are an absolute necessary to almost all combat on Atys.

I'd say that it is without a doubt the most important skill in game. Its essential for boss hunts, its vital in OP battles, even in regular hunting its needed. The skills needed to kill the mob change, but they all need a healer.

In WoW, I had a 60 (max) priest with full epic equipment. A healer. I could heal myself to become the _BEST_ tank in PvP, and my playstyle is being highly defensive using self heals to keep myself alive through anything.

I guess Ryzom isn't for me, I'm not into leveling all the way to 250 for no self benefit whatsoever other than popularity.

This is not WoW!

This game is more about team work and less about being the BEST.

There is no better benefit to a team then having a good healer in it.

not much about ryzom is "self", more team/co-operation/loyalty

what sounds more fun?.... same spell self heal spamming for 3 mins, or using loads of different heal spells to keep a whole team alive including a proper tank in heavy armour?

Try going melee then. Axe, pike, spear, etc.
Unlike Wow, Ryzom sticks to reality a bit closer and makes its tanks part of the melee class. The image of a guy in a white doctors suit tanking a kincher is funny, but not really very realistic. "back!, i say, BACK! I've got a scalpel and I know how to use it!"

Also, unlike WoW (class based), SoR is a skill based game where any player can level any skill to 250. So the "BEST" tank can be a number of different combos. PvP is Ryzom is usually a group thing, so a healer would spend his time healing, rather than attempting to tank. 1 on 1 duels would involve self-heals rather than casting heal on yourself over and over. It would be an extremely flawed system if the healer could simply heal his HP/Sap constantly. Anyway, different game, different rules....

It doesn't seem odd to you that the best tank is a healer?

Shouldn't the best tank be an actual tank in heavy armor and prowess with a blade and shield for parrying and absorbing damage?

Historically - Ryzom had self-healing, it even had a skill tree.

Its was removed during focus beta testing as it was exploitable and made all homins effectively imortal. 'bomb heals', used to include the caster, this was removed becuase it gave infinite heath/sap to the healer.

Healing gives more HPs/Sap/Stam than is consumed, if this was changed to prevent the infinite HPs/Sap for the caster (reducing the amount healed or increasing the cost) - I doubt many teams would stay alive for long, there were many that thought the game was doomed when HP heals were halved. We adapted to those changes and its now long forgotten.

The game is not flawed, just because it does something different to other games.

Its a simple game mechanic - healers must be teamed, heal and the mob killed for XP - its not right or wrong, its just the way it is.

No, because a warrior with heavy armor can be killed with spells.
And I didn't "tank" for my group in PvP, I tanked because I healed my group and got attacked. When I got attacked, I had the option to defend myself. I don't like relying on a team to save me.

I kind of enjoy healing in this game. I get a kick out of watching my little Tryker do that twirl thing every time I heal someone.

I'm one of those people chasing others down in the newbie area to heal them!! :)
