I think he's referring to forum PvP and not the in-game variety ;)

It comes down to a very simply problem that is apparently polarizing the community.

"Is entry to PR in order to dig genuinely consensual PvP?"

On the one side we have the argument "You entered PR, you know what that means, therefore yes."

On the other side we have the argument "For some people, entry to PR is mandated by the fact that it's the only place to acquire certain materials. Therefore it is not truly consensual."

Unfortunately, I don't think either side will ever convince the other to change.

Therefore, I'll make some popcorn for us all, can you bring the soda.

Ta.

There are 4 PR zones that are PvP and there are 5 PR zones that are NOT PvP.

It's your choice.

Didn't know that (price you pay for being a Noob. :) ). Assuming that all mats can be harvested in the 5 non PvP sections of PR, then it's game set and match to the first team.

Anyone want some popcorn before I split?

Sounds like this is an old argument and given that the oldies have been playing SoR for years, this is highly likely. I posted in reaction to connecting the myth with the signature. Perhaps some kind of smiley is needed in that sig to denote sarcasm as it comes across as a bragging RPK with no way for a new player to know otherwise.

As to these opposing positions, why is there an assumption that because you are flagged that you WILL kill? Since this is a game with a lot of RP opportunity, perhaps people wish to RP with more immersion and allow themselves to be attacked. There are two sides to flagging: being accountable for your attacks/kills and the risk of being attacked.

Saying you have to attack because you are flagged is an excuse to expose a game mechanic rather than developing some motive. RPKing is hiding behind the game mechanic that allows you to kill.

Yes, entering a PvP area carries with it an assumption of risk, but the person who attacks is still accountable for their actions. The community should hold them responsible by labelling them. What guild are they in? Are they providing the RPK safe harbor? How will that affect trade agreements and the guild reputation?

By the same token the person assuming the risk should protect themselves and if they do not then they cannot blame the game mechanic, but should accept their death as a part of the risk. Whether this means having a mate cover you or digging sub-optimally so you are not digging naked, there is some pain involved in protecting oneself. You have to give something up to balance the risk.

This argument started way before Ryzom was in closed beta. It's been an issue since open PvP environments were created in UO, EQ1 and AC1. You have the camp that comes from FPS experience and believes you kill because you can and that is what the game design allows. The other camp from RPGs and Strategy games says that just because you can kill doesn't mean you should. And if you must then be accountable for your kills. Whether it affects your reputation, your standing in your guild or your standing in the community.

I think it still is a very interesting discussion, even if it's been argued for about 7 years now.
