I guess it will have to come down to something like this:

Religion: Kami

If I have understood this one correct:

I assume citizenship/religion is attained at the mainland. I also assume when I teleport from the starter island I will be teleported to the Matis capital, right?

How hard is it to get to the Tryker capital etc? When you want to become their citizen. Can you easily teleport or is it at trek through hell?

There are more who joined the 'dark side' than they would have you believe. Seti, Heavanor, Lillaryn, and Praha to name but a few, and thats only from the Infinity ranks. To be honest, your civ allegiance has yet to play a major part of the game and as such, tends to be less important that faction. Just pick what you want to.

Sekhmet and Lathaniel are two more Matis who have chosen to join the 'dark side'.

Well they are when you've no escort, just 4 or 5 teams of travellers and someone with a torn and smudged map
