I'm an ex-FFXI player (since NA release), I stopped playing in March after they gimped BST and played RF for a couple months and found this game on a demo right before the big patch where they installed the latest beginner area. I'd have to say this game blows ffxi away... Graphics are a ton better, community is unbelievable (in a VERY good way) and fun factor; I'm loving it. This game is totally customizable as far as keys so that I was able to change a lot of my controls to the way they were in FFXI, which makes everything a ton easier. They have a macro bar so to speak, like FFXI, but u can click it with your mouse and it's called a hotbar. You can make your own macros to fit any key you desire that can run shortcuts etc. It's a lot more complex then FFXI, as far as gear, malus factors, and skills etc so basically a new system to learn but controls you are used to(if you change them). The lore is extensive, but I'm learning it as I go. The beginner area, I played in has enough quests to keep you occupied and teach you the game at the same time. I stayed there about a week or two and got my skills up (except crafting =P) to a little bit above 40 before going to the mainland (but I don't think it is really necessary to skill to 40 I just chose to). The quests give you some good gear to start life on the mainland also, so I would suggest to do the quests. I think as an FFXI vet you should find this game pretty fun, and a nice breath of "fresh air".
I will bet you will love the seasonal change (at least I do heh).
Hope to see you on Atys ^.-.
