Existing free trials will not in fact be extended, as the new player experience is not accessable for your old characters. To participate in the exciting "Ruins of Silan", just make a new trial account when the servers come back up; not forgetting to cancel your old one.

Not you, silly People whose account was still in the free trial period before the patch. Any character created now will find themselves in the Ruins of Silan. Players who just started before the patch, though, and haven't left the old starter isles yet, would probably be best off making a new trial account and starting over again. They've lost 4 days of their free period on their original account and will probably find themselves all alone on the old islands.
