It doesn't take a guild to give you someone to talk to. Ask questions in region if need be or to folks you find about. I would recommend against choosing any guild until you have decided if/what part of the lore (and politics) you are interested in. Though with work you can be anything you like, some things are easier than others.

Well a guild would at least give me some connection to the people in the game. All my fun times have been with groups of players, I play MMOs for interaction. If I am just going to level and be alone when I do it, I could just load up Oblivion.
Typing /who gets me on average 4 people. And so far in the last 2 days after entering the mainland, I have met 2 people in playtimes ranging from the afternoon, early morning and I even woke up at 2:30am EST today to see if I would find someone new. Met a CSR, he was the only on with me.
I love this game so far, I would hate to find myself paying $14.95 a month to just roam free and find I can't do many missions without player assitance.
I am going to stay for a month and see how things roll. I am aware things change and not to make a judgement from a few days. I was just hoping someone online would be in my area to team up with.

Welcome to Ryzom! As far as guilds go, you might be interested in having a look through this lovely list here:
http://www.ryzom.com/forum/showthread.php?t=22171 Having an idea about whether you'd like to be Kami, Karavan, or Neutral will help narrow things down a bit, but even if you haven't gotten that far it may help to have a look through some of those websites to get a feel for which guild(s) might suit your playstyle so that you can perhaps seek them out, ask questions, and get to know people.
Personally I'm in the Central time zone and am typically logged in for at least a few hours every day, so feel free to send me a tell (Tshael) if there's anything I can help out with.

Well, playing Eastern Time Zone (currently EDT, GMT -4) you should see quite a few folks on between about 1130 and 1430, mostly from EU, and then again from about 1900-2400 (mostly US).
Which part of the mainland are you on? In some areas, you may have to move to a yellow, orange, or red zone to see folks when you type /who, as it only shows people in the region you're currently in. In the Desert, there should always be some folks about Pyr, but in Zorai lands Cities of Intuition is often empty as folks have headed elsewhere for hunting or foraging. Personally I don't have much experience with Matis lands or Tryker lands, can't tell you when they might be most populous.
Personally, I'm USUALLY on between 1330 and 1530 MDT (1130 - 1330 EDT).
If you're on during those times, try sending me a tell (/tell Samardnaz). If I'm on, I'd be happy to come chat, lend a hand, provide info, etc.

Okies, so the zone colors I have no idea what you mean. Sorry, just started Saturday.
I did meet a very nice player last night who showed me how to create a new action with combined actions. Now it's all making sense.
That is what a guild is famous for in my opinion. I am not a big PVP but more of a PVE. But I have always helped guilds by being a scout, a gopher or crafter in my past lives of MMOs.
This game is great, and the idea to create your own actions to fit your gameplay is astounding! When I learned of this it started to make sense.
I was pondering why I had an accurate attack, and a damage increase attack. But found them both lacking of course. Now my blade swings true and swift.
Thank You all for your help, and I did apparently pick a lonely race I found out. I was also not aware of this before I played. But it is all right. I now have the skills to make the game enjoyable, and I don't feel so lost.
THANK YOU ALL!!!
P.S. I am from Ohio, in North America. And my online name is Orbu.

Zone "colors" are an indication of the difficulty level of the mobs you'll find in that area. When you target a mob, the name and health of the targeted mob are shown in the Target Status window (by default I believe the 'T' key brings this up). Next to the mob's name is a little colored box with a star and usually a number next to the star. The color here indicates the mob's overall level (for instance, blue zone mobs should range in level from 1 to 50) and the number of stars (1*, 2*, 3* 4* or 5*, or 1 black star or 2 black stars) indicate the mob's reletive difficulty within that zone. In order of increasing difficulty (or danger) the zones go Blue (1-50), Yellow (51-100), Orange (101-150), Red (151 - 200), and Purple (201 - 250). There are some exceptions, for instance "Named" or Boss mobs can be 10 levels higher than the upper limit for their zone.
If we take Fyros Lands (The Burning Desert) as an example (the area I'm most familiar with):
Imperial Dunes (the area around Pyr) is a Blue zone.
Oflovak's Oasis is Yellow
Frahar Towers is Orange
Dunes of Exile (the area around Dyron) is Red
Scorched Corridor is Purple.
Outlaw Canyon is a Red Zone.
Savage Dunes (The area around Thesos) is Red
Sawdust Mies (The area just north of Thesos) is Orange
The capital cities are all located in blue zones, and as a "newbie" just porting over from the training island you'll end up in the capital city for your chosen race.
Hope this clears the mud a little...
