Nope, you mustn“t. Just do what you want. :)
Did go along loooong without both, worked fine apart from sometimes annoying my guildmates with... : "I need a new...whateverwasjustbroken" ;)

Yes, each branch of a skill is an indepenent thing to level, you can master as many as you want and have time for, but of course it gets very time consuming

Here's what I would suggest:
-Get some melee levels, don't have to master it, just for a nice HP base
-Get heal to 100 for the double missile spells, make you proficient, and can always improve it later
-Then focus on one or both afflictions. They have some pretty powerful abilities for casting on creatures to control them, make theme easier to hit, decrease their damage, etc. Also aflfictions aren't costly to cast, so can wear medium armor for good protection while you're doing it.

That sound like what you're looking for? :)

i mean, is a must to have craft and/or harvesting to progress in the game?
Welcome Rupsito! :)

You need not craft or harvest at all. However, you will likely be poorer than many since the wealthiest homins are high level crafters.

Your spells will cost about 25% more hp and sap while wearing medium then if you were in light. It really wont' hamper your healing that much, but generaelly you'll want to have sets of both light armor and medium armor depending on the situation.
For example if you're off on an easy leveling hunt somewhere, and only the main tank is ever getting hit, can wear light to conserve as much as possible.
But then say you go on a trek somewhere and never know what's going to jump out and attack you, throw the medium on for more HP and protection.

i've been playing since launch and there are ppl playing 6 months who are higher level than me, its not that bad to catch up if you dont mind rushin, myself i think its better to enjoy the journey and not worry too much about levels )

Only need dex if you plan to dig/craft. Use harvest sps for it.There are no ubers in Atys. No matter how many lvls you get you'll never solo a Q270 sup boss. Heck a Q70 sup boss will give you a decent fight-Kil
