Or if it is just a "patch-change" for whatever reason Nevrax may do this.
Hmm, very interesting. So far I've never seen our hunting behavior have any effect on the creatures. As far as I know, every pack of creatures just respawns indefinitely everytime they're killed. (The only exception being the day right after a patch, when respawns and migration patterns seem to be working in strange ways.)

I think it's a patch-change. I noticed some months ago that some packs of creatures seemed to have moved or disappeared. The ocyx around Thesos and Dyron being examples of that. Another example could be the najab that used to be in the far northwest corner of the paramount stock area. I haven't seen them there in months. Perhaps they fled for the encroaching goo?

Bodocs kept spawning all around, and within a few hours the area was almost packed with mooing, shuffling longhorns. And for a seemingly long time no Gingo and Ragus spawned... So THAT does function it seems.
That does make me doubt however.... I've never seen anything happen like what you describe here. A hunting team very often kills every predator in an area for hours on end, but I've never seen it cause an increase in herbivores or a decrease in predators.

It could be only in specific locations, maybe. The Green Seed camp is a place that has several groups of herbivores and several packs of predators all spawning in a small area. Such a rich variety of animals is rare. In such a location, I could imagine more than half of the 'potential amount' of bodocs there is always dead or respawning. If you kill all the predators and so stop the continuous killing of bodocs, they'd accumulate to their full potential.

Most places have the different packs of creatures much more spread out and further apart. I guess killing all predators in an area that barely has any herbivores, wouldn't help increase the number of herbivores there.

I would guess that some spawn points have multiple mob types that could spawn there, so, for eample, around the green seed camp a gingo can spawn or a bodoc can spawn, thus if you only kill gingos eventualy only bodocs will be left untill you clear them

I noticed it most in Thesos, and after patches rather than during the normal course of the game.

hehe now to put a dampener on your theories... every time it hits spring a new cycle starts.. ther are 4 cycles to a year each cycle the mobs move around a little and every full year (10 weeks roughly) the mobs repeat the cycle.

sometimes patches change the cycle a little (who rememebers easy to kill shalahs in ff?) but generally mobs move aroudn at the start of a new cycle (spring)

That does sound very plausible. But I'm not convinced until I see the najabs back at their old spot :p

Things like this would be easier to confirm if we knew what date it was on Atys. *pokes the devs* When will homins recover the lost knowledge of how to keep a calendar?

hehe well i've been out of game for about 2 weeks now but by my guess i'd have said it hit winter at abotu 7.40 pm this evening (UK time) so that means spring isn't too far away.. i've never seen mobs move as season changes so not too sure how it happens. any budding zooligists up to the challange of mob tracking?

and yes it is awlays annoying whne you say to somone.. 'i know a great spot for najab/ocyx/varinx i got tons of lvls on them' and then find none

No. As kayak said, there are migrations of some mobs from one spot to another every season. Basically in winter it seems depleted, that's why if you have a journey to do, you'd better plan it in winter.
Otherwise, mobs spawn in a given area by groups. The group won't respawn until all its element are dead and their corpse decayed, or until the server reboots. That means that if you let only one psykopla on the road to Natae, you will have a feeling of depletion. Kill that last one and all the group will respawn, bringing life again.
Every high-end hunter knows the Upper Grove of Confusion. Even if perma-slaughtered, the Great Jugulas are still there. But you'll have to move your hunt spot when season will change, because the creatures will move.

:)

PS: If you want to see mobs moving when season change, you may go to the road near Davae. Always impressive to see all the bodocs moving. ;)

There are also some mobs that deplete over time if they arent hunted (to save server power?)

The plants up by the karavan teleporter in Knoll of Desent, for instance. You may go up there at some time and none will be around, but if you find and kill the wayward 3 that hang around, they all will pop.

Yes because someone passed by and killed all of them but 3.
There's no depletion over time. The only thing that may happen, and plants are not concerned, is attacks of carnivores on herbivores. Also there, you'll see that there are different types of predator/prey couples. All carnivores don't eat the same herbivores. But whatever is the issue of the encounter, if the last creature of the group is dead and its corpse decays, the whole group will respawn. It's rather ennoying to have a respawn of a group of Aranas, Yelks or Armas when foraging, because at their respawn they tend to all auto-target you and come to see you. "Where's my sou..." are the last words before the explosion resounds.
